I've lost two dogs over my 23 years, one I had since I was a toddler and one we had from about age 7 to age 16. I know the pain of losing them, and it sucks. But while you may be a mess of emotions now, it will get better with time. Time heals all wounds, so they say. Be glad for the years you had with him, remember the happy times.

I my mother once found a small kitten. He had a growth problem, and as such his head was unnaturally bigger than his body. To compound that, he had a rare type of virus/infection that normally only affects dogs. We kept the kitten for a couple of days, feeding it and caring for it. We gave it some medicine from the vet, and he seemed to get better.
One morning we woke up and saw the kitten was barely able to stand. He was just so weak. That moment was so heavy on my heart. The little thing was so adorable (still fit in your hand). He'd climb on my bed by clawing up the side after failing a couple of times. Every time I think about the poor thing I feel like crying.
Anyways, a lot of us have experienced similar things. The best thing you can do is just push forward and things will slowly get better. Best of wishes man.

I can't decide if it's better to know and expect it or to be surprised by it. I lost my dog about 2 years ago and that was one of the hardest things I've ever gone through. He wasn't a dog or a pet. He was my friend, a family member. Seeing him slip away after the injection was hard and I don't ever want to go through it again (though I will because I have a new one).
All I can say is that despite what people say, it is okay to mourn and cry over losing a pet, especially if they are close to you like yours seems to be. It is hard at first but it does get easier with time. I still get sad when I think about it, but it's easier to handle now after so long. Your dog loves you and he knows that you wouldn't hurt him so you can take comfort in that and the fact that it's in his best interest.

I don't know how I'd react to having to put my dog down, although I know the day may come as he's always sorta had issues with small tumours although it's never really effected his bouncy affectionate demeanour.
I hope you get to spend time with your dog before it's time to let him go.
You're absolutely doing the right thing in easing your pet's suffering.
Rest assured that your dog probably loves you more than you realise, and that you've probably far more memories of him that will come back to you in time.
It's awful losing a friend, animal or no, but you've probably given your dog a long and happy life that many other dogs don't enjoy.
I hope you get to say goodbye properly, and that this somehow makes you feel a little better.

My dog was the same age as me and I got him when I was one. I put him down when I was eighteen.Jun_Jun said:

I don't know if this will make you feel better or not, but it helped me to know that dogs are genetically hard-wired to never go down easy. They have to be put down- or they will continue to hurt themselves just to "keep up with the pack."

My dog passed away nearly 2 years ago, a pure German Shepherd (though I couldn't care less if he was the mixiest mix in the world) that had been living with us since I was 6 (going to be 20 in 2 weeks), he was really protective of us and especially me, when he was 13 he got a painful arthritis which unfortunately is usual for GSDs his age. Worst thing is? He was mentally healthy, I remember that every day I came back from school he would try to crawl towards me to welcome me back home and he would bark at strangers even if it hurt his jaw, it was really painful to see and I had to rush in so he wouldn't move so much and hurt himself more, we had to euthanize him.
He lives on our memories and his 7 pups though, 6 of them are with loving families and the 7th one is with me, next week it'll be their 5th birthday, and I'll always remember him.
