Hey friends, I live in Kansas and a particularly bad storm has just moved in at 11:00 PM CST and is going to last until 4:00 AM. I could lose power so I might not be able to keep up with this thread.

I ask yall to keep us in your thoughts and prays.

For a discussion, what was the worst storm, natural disaster, or man-made disaster you lived through?

EDIT: it is now 12:20 and the worst of the storm past. It is still raining though but the wind has died down.

I hope nothing bad happens to you!

OT: Worst storm I remember was when I was pretty young, about 7-8 years old. The wind was so strong I had to hold on to my father to keep myself from lifting off the ground.

Golf ball sized hailstones in Edmonton, AB.

They were the size of baseballs in some areas. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/edmonton/story/2007/07/16/weather-alberta.html

Good luck.

Worse I went through was Katrina in Florida.
The MREs weren't all bad, but one tires of Ham Sandwiches very quickly when stuck in a house for days.

Oh right, lost power for a week or few as well, forgot that.

I once got caught in a severe thunder storm on a river when I was like 8. My dad's boat is not very large and has little cover from the elements. Needless to say I was damn scared and to this day i'm afraid of storms while i'm on the water.

I know, people really under estimate how good MRE's (military) are. I mean for food that can stay on the shelf for 10 years they taste great.

Once an ice storm knocked the power out in about 75% of my city and it took them months to get everywhere fully restored. My house was had no power for 2 or 3 weeks, and it all happened during the school year.

Thanks for this topic, thinking about it made me realize just how many nasty things haven't happened to me in my lifetime. My house has never been burned down or flooded, I've never been shot or stabbed, that kind of stuff. Hope you're all ok.

I wouldn't say great, but they weren't half bad.

Of course I was a very picky eater, so maybe they were farily great.

...I was in south Carolina during Katrina.

Yes I know Katrina was in N.O. it just that we caught some of the storms and it destroyed a few houses.

Oh, and the philadelphia snowstorm this year, a lot of people lost power.

My place is pretty normal with disasters and such. The worst was a leak in my room.

I wonder how many threads have this title by now...
Anyway, sitting through hurricanes while living 1 mile from the coast is always fun, until the storm stops. Then it gets horrible.

Hurricane Ike, Hurricane Rita. I remember my mom taped up all the windows like crazy because she didn't have the patience to board them up.

Rita was the only storm I evacuated from, and it ended up mostly missing our house. We just got the dry side of the storm. People who stayed said power was back the day the storm ended.

And I said from the very beginning that our house was going to be there when we got back.

I frequently go storm chasing with my big bro, something not for the faint of heart. We once found ourselves driving head on into what we later found out was an F2 Tornado. Fun times.

There was an ice storm where I live a couple years back that knocked out the power for about 4 days. It happened around Christmas time so I had just gotten a bunch of new games I was wanting to play. It was excruciating.

Ehh I didn't live through this since at the time I lived in Florida, but the old May 3rd Tornado in Oklahoma would of came close to the house (Within 3 blocks) my family has had for years.
But the worst storm I have been through would have had to been a hurricane we had to drive through to get back to Oklahoma.

I hope the best for you. Be safe and smart (if you're cooking and the power goes out, turn the burners off. I heard on the news about somebody who almost burned their house down because of that.)

Okay, I lived through the Hardin County (Kentucky) Ice Storm of '09. That wasn't fun. My house had practically no insulation (it was really old and I didn't know about that when I moved in. I assumed the landlord had it insulated...punk.) So, the woman (who is now my wife) and I had just started living together and the storm hit. We had to cuddle under as many blankets as we could find, set up heaters by the bed, and snuggle for warmth. It was a bonding experience. I feel indebted to her for staying with me considering that we hadn't been dating that long and all she had to do to leave would be to grab a plane ticket and fly back down to Florida (where we live now...it's so warm and the beaches are great...for now, and of course the BP oil spill might ruin them). Oh, did I mention that, after the power went out, we just threw all our groceries on the back porch. Not only did everything stay cold, most of it froze! Yeah, those nights with no power (meaning no heat) were not fun.

OT: Also, every local store had completely run out of space heaters.

Same here. My mom and I evacuated from Rita all the way to my friend's house in Katy, which was about 15 minutes away. Didn't Rita start off as Category 4 then drop down to a Cat 1 or 2?
