Red Dead Redemption. Watching the sun come up over the mountains, slowly lightening the vast plain in front of me. Wow.

Also, when you first enter Mexico after the mission on the river. Beautiful.
Yeah, this for me too. There was a lot of times I would just chill out on RDR and take in the scenery.

Oh yeah, Mass Effect as well. Many parts.

I don't know if I would say "awestruck", but I definitely thought the environment in Brutal Legend was awesome. As much as people find fault with that game, you can't deny there was a good amount of imagination that went into it.

The latest game that I have been struck with awe is Castlevania: Lords of Shadows. That game is just so beautiful, and the music is fantastic.

Mine too is Red Dead Redemption. I thought I'd completed the game when you
kill your old gang member
but then the whole thing kicks off with you and your family, an it's really breathtaking the connection you have with them. Then there's the ending.
There are no words.

EDIT: However nothing in game has taken my breath away like this trailer did. Oblivion is my favourite game, and this made me shed a tear.
Agreed in SO many ways

I'm sorry, but after seeing your avatar on multiple threads, I've been compelled by sheer curiosity to ask what the hell is going in in that. That wordless child has been taunting me, mouthing words I shall never, ever hear, and now I have to know who she is, what she's saying, what the hell that's from, and just explain please. It's driving me insane.
Haha :D That has been asked from me quite a few times before, but never in such a nice way.

You deserve the most thorough answer.

I was about to post it here, but because it ended being a bit long and very off-topic to say the least, I'll PM it to you.

World of warcraft, first character, starting as a gnome and grinding your way round boring snowy wastes with your friends, still great fun mind you. But thats why the game is so well constructed, after all that just when your getting unbearably bored of it, you get told to travel to Ironforge (dwarf city) and you walk in and see
just blows you over even though the graphics are so dated, my friend (who plays crysis maxed out) went "holy fuck"

Dwarf Fortress. Giant desert scorpion took my dwarfs axe and chopped him in half with it. I gained immense respect for the beasties from that (and he didn't even beat anyone to death with their pants....)

OT: plane crash in l4d, it was the first big thing i'd seen in a game, though it's not impressive anymore :/

I got this in the Halo: Reach New Alexandria level, when you see the covenant cruiser come over haed for the fisrt time. It hovers there for a moment and then starts charging it's weapons. All you see is a flash and then the smoldering wreck of of the city silhouetted against an amber glow.

Whatever you may think about that game, the atmosphere was fantastic.

Mass Effect 2.

They all lived.

I cringed and jumped whenever a party member was shown to survive. Tali... Garrus... Samara... They all made it... :)D

Also, AC:Brotherhood... Climbing to the top of the Coliseum, and rotating the camera to see all of Rome and the building itself... Wow.

I am simply awesturck Escapist, just awestruck. Minecraft's world is estimated to be 8 times the size of the earths, I thought I had colonized a relativly large chunk of it when I decided to venture off into the distance with nothing on me just to recon the sorrunding area near one of my bases. I climbed over the nearest hill top and simply felt my breath leave me. Facing me, sitting there for what must have been miles, was a desert. Infinite and unyeilding, sitting there staring at me. I quietly slipped back down the hill and retreated into my base for the remainder of the day.

So my question to you Escapist, have you ever been simply awestruck by a game? Recount your tales for us.
Would it have killed you to put your last sentence as the topic-name?

Eight times the size of earth is roughy the theoretical limit before the software becomes unstable and crashes, according to Notch.
Sounds sensible to me, probably has something to do with max address size or something. That's still fucking huge, it would take like six years of just walking to make it crashed out like that. That blows my mind lol.

It's been said but Fallout 3, leaving the vault for the very first time is just like... whoah.

Bioware have got a few out of me for the big shock moments in their games, looking out the citadel window in the Wards in ME1 made me stop for a moment for example.

Tomb Raider tends to get this reaction out of me at some point, and TR:U in particular had several moments where I just stopped and stared at the scenery for a good five minutes.

Further back Final Fantasy IX, the first time the opening movie played I was like 'this is going to be like nothing else' and since this was one of my first games you can imagine just how excited it got me.

But going right back to the start, there was nothing quite like that point in Pokemon where you finally got out of Pallet Town, and just thought 'yeah, I'm gonna be a Pokemon master.' Especially if you saw the TV shows before you played the game, you wanted to be Ash, no questions asked.

Actually, looking back, games have been really good to me over the years. Even more than I already thought.

My first use of the M-920 Cain...
Ha! I've only ever used it once... Killed me, my team, and all the enemies I was facing at the time...

OT: When I upgraded from a Gameboy Advance to a Xbox 360...

"The graphics... It looks SOOO REAL!!!!"

I don't even remember what game it was... The transition was more breathtaking than anything I'd ever seen prior!

Assassin's Creed 2. It took 5 playthroughs for it to lose the new game shine, a new record for me. I still love it of course, I was just amazed by such a fantastic sequel to a pretty meh game.

How far games have come has constantly amazed me over and over again. Right from the first moment I stepped up to an arcade cabinet and dropped in a quarter. To the first time I picked up a controller of an Atari 2600. To the NES, Sega, interesting ventures in arcade games. Persistent world MMOs. The list goes on and on.

The Arms Fort Answerer...The single, most intimidating foe I've ever faced down. It's not exactly difficult, but just the sheer size of it, the noises, the fact that it has a fucking heart beat. It just hangs there serenely in the air, not bothering anything until something moves in to attack it.

It's almost like a whale, how it just sits there, gracefully, a huge, daunting sight to behold, zero threat from a distance and absolutely exquisite to look at.

Just...My god...
