So I need your help fellow Escapists.

I receieved a GTX 275 today for my birthday to replace my GT8800. I, being the gamer I am, squealed in what was obviously a very manly display of delight. Of course me being the proud owner of one (1) technological curse things weren't as simple as just plugging it in and enjoying some really fun, and now very shiny, games.

I slotted it in and it looked all pretty and cosy inside my computer and then I turned my computer on. It was kinda loud because of the fan but I could get used to that. Except when my computer was booting up it got stuck on the validating dmi pool data.

I naturally had no idea what this meant and have spent the last 8 hours buried in the internet and poking around the delicate insides of my precious computer, all to no avail. I tried clearing the CMOS, after first discovering what it was, and that didn't work and I even tried booting from my CD and all wonderful kinds of jazz, although it wouldn't shock me if I managed to do one of those things incorrectly.

So I implore you Escapists, shower me with your sticky technical knowledge, and help me play some really pretty new games by helping me install my graphics card without blowing anything up. If you do I promise to love you forever, or not depending on how you feel about that sort of thing.

Find out what type of motherboard you have, then search the internet for a list of cards it can take. If your card isn't on the list, then either it or the motherboard will have to go.

When does it say "validating dmi pool data"?

If it's after windows starts loading, try reinstalling windows (on a new partition if necessary).

Try the card in another computer if you can. Maybe the card its self is faulty. I'm not sure how to go about this issue other then test on another system.

I wish I could help more.

Motherboard and PSU information please.
How would I found out such information? Just so you know I am utterly hopeless at computer wizardry.

About 8 seconds into starting up. Its before the Windows Starting Screen and its after what i believe is the Motherboard initialisations creen. But I'm not too sure. At any rate its pretty soon after hitting the on button.

Go to your start menu and either:
[ul]
[li]Select Run... and type 'dxdiag' into the box (on XP or earlier)[/li]
[li]or type 'dxdiag' into the box on the start menu (on Vista and 7)[/li]
[/ul]

What you want is your equivalent of the bit in the red box here (though it's probably written somewhere in your computer documentation or on the motherboard itself):

Give that to me and I'll try to find out if they are compatible. I can't help you with the PSU though.

Hmmm... Try it with you HDD plugged out. If it still says it, it's a Mobo problem. If not, it'll probably be fixed with a fresh OS install.

Does it work if you put your 8800 back in?

and damnit! I could only afford the upgrade from a 8800 to a GTS250 :(

Bring the computer to the store you bought it from and see what they have to say. My store even installs graphics cards for a fee...

It seems that they are compatible, so this was a red herring.

All I can recommend now is that you update every driver you have, and if that doesn't work, contact Nvidia.
