My idea for a MMO

Over the past few months, I've read of various MMORPGs that are really trying to stand out. They want to break the mold. Just look at the recent DC Universe preview on the escapist.

So I got to thinking: Why can't they do something like this with DBZ?

Now, hear me out. Take the basic DBZ universe and change some things and you could have a pretty incredible universe. For example, make it so the Saiyan homeworld was never destroyed.

So what would be the game's draw? Power and freedom. Imagine this. You are able to fly wherever and whenever you want. You can preform powerful techniques like Big Bang, Solar Flare, Kaio-Ken, and Dragon Fist. You can fight other players in massive worlds. And not even just one on one. Perhaps you have a three, four, or much larger free for all. Afraid of higher levels detecting you? Stay on the ground and run to avoid them sensing your power level.

As for game and combat mechanics, those would have to be different. All you would select would be your race, but no classes. No limits on what your character does or how they fight. Instead, you have base stats, but each level offers bonus points that you can plug in to build up your stats like Health, Ki, Strength, Energy, Defense, and Speed. You use skill points to learn abilities from various skill trees like Melee Attacks and Defensive Abilities. And skill trees are not separate. At various points you can move from one tree to another, like from Melee Attacks to Energy Attacks. Even the Skill Tree would be completely different. Not a flat 2-D plain, but a 3-D structure, kind of like DNA. Instead of a number value for Ki, it would take a cue from the various DBZ fighting games and use Ki gauges which you would expend to use abilities like Kamehameha and Instant Transmission. Fighting would require skill. No auto attacks. You have to attack, block, dodge and counter without the game doing it for you.

The races would be Human, Saiyan, and Namekian at the least.
Saiyans would have the best core stats and the most Ki, but would have the fewest skill points and be unable to learn healing techniques.
Humans would have the weakest core stats and least Ki, but gain the most bonus points and skill points.
Namekians would be between humans and Saiyans overall, but also gain Namekian only skills and abilities like Regeneration and Extended Reach.

So Escapists, what do you think of this game idea?
By the way, I can only dream of making such a game. I have no talent or knowledge for programming.

That made me lol. How with the first comment you may have made the entire thread redundant.
I didn't even know about it.

Might make an ok multiplayer game, with different game modes like CTF, team battles or something like that. (12-32 players at a time perhaps?) Seems like a better fit for what you are aiming at.

If you are looking for an action-oriented MMO, you could try Vindictus.

Sooooo basicly a normal mmo but with dragon ball z.
And instead of auto attack all battles are now pretty much QTE's.
And the way to avoid higher levels is also rather flawed. They could just go onto the ground themselves and wreck havoc opon newbs. You having to build up your own class i rather like though.

Also MMO's do need skill. If you dont know when to use your powers you will likely die.Not to mention the group strategies.

No offence meant, but you really didnt think of anything new.

I've always wanted a western style MMO but it would be one that has absolutely no levels or classes in it, everyone starts and remains the same level. The only way you can "level up" is by having better gear and the only way you can have better gear is with in game money or by crafting it yourself. You can do anything you like in my game, you could open a shop that sold clothing or become a gunsmith and make guns or become an outlaw or bounty hunter.

Basically original (Good) SWG but in a western setting.

Too niche IMO. MMO's have to have mass market appeal.

Well, this is just something that had been on my mind. Just thought the whole power, free flying aspect in an huge open world was cool. I actually tried to come up with some original ideas, too (no classes, different design for a skill tree, etc).

Thanks for the constructive criticism. To be fair, this is just an idea that I had thought about for a week or two.

Keep in mind, that avoiding higher level players wouldn't just be not flying. The way I imagine the game world would be huge. With rivers, trees, caves and other such things. Simply running on the ground would not be enough to allow high level players to wreck havoc on noobs. They'd have to find them, and there wouldn't be much incentive to do that.

Really, my favorite part of my own idea is making your own class without major restraints.

I'm also well aware of the complexity of MMOs, my point is it wouldn't be just point and click this or that. You would have to make your character attack, rather than watching him do it for you. I didn't mean that MMOs take no skill so much as the game design would require actual input to fight.
