Am i expecting to much from my ISP?

So im guessing my internet speed is slow (maxes out at 500-700kbs) but im fine with the speed. the problem i have is that it isnt consistent.

Am i expecting to much from my isp or should i be able to play cod around 7 at night?

It seems that everyone gets on and uses the internet between 6-8 cause thats when my internet goes rubbish. I play cod on an australia server and get kicked constantly cause my ping goes up to 200-400 too often. Just then its 6:40 and i was kicked from the cod server like 4 times in 15 mins.

So am i expecting to much from my isp to think i should have a fairly standard experience 24 hours a day or are peaks and troughs normal?

Also on a more specific note anyone know of a good isp for the shoalhaven region?

Depending on where you live in Australia, Internet like that is the norm.

Where i am, the best ISP we've got gives an incredibly variable speed during peak hours,

Okay James, I am guessing you have telstra. I have iinet and I can play online games at night.

Peaks and troughs are normal and your area depends on the speed of your connection. You however have an awful connection, this maybe because you can't get fast network in your area or you have the wrong deal with your ISP.

Your low speed is the reason for your hideous ping.

I have iinet as I said before and really love it. itunes, tf2 servers and websites like iview are in the iinet freezone. Get iinet.

(I get 13mbps)

yep telstra and last i check i have the best plan from them for my area. i may have to recheck that as something may have changed.

13mps from iinet. do you live in a town of 30000 people with the nearest proper city like 30-40 mins away?

Hmm.
I'm running through whoever owns Pennytel right now, and my Internet is pretty stable. Only time it goes down is when my home server crashes, and that's not the ISPs fault, but my own.
That said I live maybe an hour out of Melbourne in the suburbs, so dependent on where you live would be dependent on what sort of speeds you'd get. Using speedtest mine can get up to 20Mb/s download, though thanks to other site's upload speed it usually only pulls things down between 500Kb/s and 1Mb/s.

So, if you live somewhere neglected by ISPs, then sadly that is all you can expect from them. Otherwise, maybe think of upgrading your plan/switching providers as it is possible to get decent Internet in Australia.

I should be getting 20mbps but my area is not great for internet like that. Not sure about the population but yeah 30-40 minutes away from Melbourne CBD.

I can't find the infomation on their website, but if you rang them http://www.iinet.net.au/contact/ they could tell you I am sure. The customer service is very good.

It isn't the speed that's hitting your ping its the contention ratio(how many people share the line).
Ask your isp if they have a line with a lower contenttion ratio may be slower speed but your ping will shoot down.

I had 3 meg internet years ago with a ping of 16 to UK server I live in Ireland, all because i moved to a newly built area with hardly any people the contention ratio was so low. then moved house to a place with 8 meg and my ping was around 80-110 all the time.

Now I am living in an area with 30 meg and my ping is 30-40.
