So, dont get me wrong I love my PS3 quite abit, but I have one problem with I cant really seem to fix (And im not buying a book for it, dont have the money for it). Anyway, the problem is a portion of my games like to lock up and freeze. This includes PS Home. I used to think it was because my discs were dirty and stuff, but now that PS Home has frozen, which doesnt have a disc, I dont know the cause.

For one if anyone knows a good fix for it let me know, and two, anyone else feel that way or have said problem?

I apologize if this in the wrong section or something.. *shrug*

It isn't in the wrong area as such, but I'd make the title a little more obvious in relation to your query.

"Why does my PS3 Freeze?" would probably be more appropriate and help bring in those that can help.

The PS3 is essentially a computer. It has a graphics card, an operating system a GPU, a CPU, ram and an interface... It's going to crash.
My computer's fairly high end and it crashes all the time regardless of how often i clean out or defrag it.
The playstation 3 is a computer. It's going to crash from time to time.
The 360 is the same.
-edit- FYI, my ps3 and my 360 both randomly freeze every few months or so. It happens. I'm not the only one this has happened to. It happens to friends too.

Yeah, i'll rememeber that next time. In all honesty I didnt want to just come on the forums and beg for help from everyone though. Made me feel wierd.

When your game freezes, do you see strange effects on the screen? Maybe a checkerboard pattern, or random horizontal lines? If you do, this would mean that your videocard is probably overheating.

Also, how often does it freeze, and which version of the PS3 do you have (how old is your PS3, is it the 60 gig, the 40 gig, the slim, etc?)
Theres nothing wrong with the way it looks when it freezes, it just kinda locks up. I believe I have a 60gig PS3 not sure on the age, I got it last year from a Pawn Shop. Randomly it'll just freeze and I have to restart it, other than that there seems to be no problems. So far this problem is "Fixed" by just saving often.

Hmm. Strange...
I have a 80Gb BC PS3 and have not had that problem.

I have very specific games crash on multiple occasions (mostly WRPGs like Fallout, Oblivion and Dragon Age) but i don't use PS Home, so I'm no help there.

Maybe there's a problem with your PS3. I hope not, for your sake.

Could the problem be something like this?

Actually my PS3 only usually freezes on those games. It never freezes on FFXIII, Battlefield Bad Company, Borderlands, or Disgaea 3. It's always Saints Row 2, Fallout, DA, and one time on Darksiders and PS Home.

Also no, it was nothing like that post.

There is nothing wrong with your ps3. Type oblivion ps3 crashing into google look around trust me it happens to everybody. Also the games that freeze the most are ones that have a big install file and large save files. Thats just from what i've noticed.

Maybe if you've noticed while playing oblivion and fallout3 the first half of the game goes by little to no issues then it starts to slow down or after awhile freeze or when your save file gets kind of big, close to 1MB it seems.

You could try to keep your ps3 higher off the ground and keep stuff off it and a little bit of a distance and dust it every once in awhile. However I have never done any of those things and my ps3 has been working since 5 months after the ps3 was first released.

Edit and home.... i was so put off by the beta that i haven't touched it. There is a story there but i'd rather not get into because i'll never get that hour of my life back. I can however see how it is very memory intensive.

Now that you mention it yeah, it's only games like that (White Knight Chronicles i've never had that issue oddly). But yes I know exactly what you mean, thank you for putting my fears to rest abit. Glad to know it's a problem alot of people have.

I've also heard that deleting and re-installing the game install data (not the save files) can help. Though I've not tested so I cannot verify. I t did work when my Fallout 3: GOTY glitched at the beginning of the Mothership Zeta expansion. By deleting then re-installing, the problem was fixed.
I'll give that a shot if it gets any worse, thanks for the help.

is the PS3 getting very hot? is it loud or makes any whiney sounds?

does the hard drive make odd noises?

thinking possible overheat or Hard drive failure / Bad sectors.

Hard drive isnt bad on the older models to deal with and even upgrade the heat issues if its that a ps3 3rd party cooling solution could help

i used to get this often.
its probly due to big games such as oblivion,
and due to having your ps3 on for long periods (especially if its in an enclosed space).
