My Only Problem with 3D

I actually only have one problem with this 'Three Dimensional' business.

I - cannot - see it.

What?

Yup. I'm half blind. Born without any sight in my left eye, if you must know. The illusion requires two functioning eyes looking at the same image.

So where does that leave me, and the thousands of other people with the same disability? Whether from birth, accident, or war, it's not unheard of to have limited or no sight in one eye.

So, 3D...it's fad, it's a gimmick, it won't last for too long - right? Could you ever see it taking over completely? How powerful is the lure of that extra 5 bucks? I really don't know how to feel when all the corporations are desperately clawing at technology which might someday leave me in its fuzzy, headache-inducing, red-and-blue tinted dust.

Wow. I thought this was going to be a "You can't see it in the commercials, I bet it sucks" kinda thing. Personally, I hope it's a fad. For your sake, for other people like you's sake, and for my wallet's sake. One of these days the industry needs to drop 3D and motion controls and work on neural stuff. All or nothing, I say.

What if they build a real 3d TV? One that lays flat down and creates figures that can be viewed from all sides. Holograms and such. That's really the only way 3d will work i think. I don't think people will have much of a problem with something like that.

I don't like 3D precisely because they give me headaches and don't look nice. The 3D with the glasses, like the movies require, are always fuzzy and disorienting. They also give me headaches. And on top of that, it completely alienates everybody who wears glasses. As someone who has worn glasses since I was 7 and only last year got contact lenses, I can't tell you how difficult it is to put 3D glasses on top of glasses. It never works. The 3D shades are always crooked which makes everything seem crooked yet not crooked and is very confusing.
3D is, essentially, stupid. Until it becomes like a hologram, I will have no part of it.

Actually, let me add something. I think it's also really irritating that everyone thinks we NEED something 3D. Who cares?
Honestly, the format doesn't matter. The only real 3D would be a hologram, and I don't WANT to run around and do things while playing a video game. The point of video games is to be able to do stuff I normally couldn't DO. If we get to this interactive stuff, then all we'll really be able to do in video games, physically, is what we can do in real life. It's stupid.

I am not a fan of 3d. The old tech gave me migraines. The new tech (Took my sister to see Toy STORY 3 in 3D) feels like it could be achieved using clever depth-of-field.

I am quite happy with playing with characters rendered in 3d on a 2d platform, without having to deal with special glasses (or projection) to see the illusion of them being a few inches off screen.

ETA: The OP makes me feel that not only with games have to have a mode for the colour blind, they will also have to make a mode to play the game without 3d tech for people who cannot process it. It seems like a huge waste of time/money.

Take it from someone who CAN see 3d, it's not a big deal. It's old technology reskinned, basically. It won't last long unless they can improve the technology significantly

What exactly is the problem here?

As it stands, there is always a 2D version released at the same time.

I, personally, love 3D. I find it to be a unique and fun experience. While I'm sad that those with such disability aren't able to experience it, that alone isn't much reason to quit developing the process. It may sound insensitive, but I don't believe that the entertainment industry should cater to the minority. That's like saying if someone is allergic to milk, noone else can use milk as an ingredient to a new dish.

It's not a fad, it's a new direction for cinema. I sincerely doubt 3D will take over cinema entirely because there are so many people who would prefer not to use it. It's expensive and unless 3D is incorporated from the beginning (or at least spent more than five months on) it really is just an embarrassment to the film. Prime examples would be Clash of the Titans and Last Airbender.

The only way I see it making a grand stand is if there was a better way of doing it that didn't induce migraines or make you wear those goofy glasses.

So don't worry. Cinema won't be 3D exclusive for a long, long time.

EDIT: Since I now realise this is in the gaming section, I feel like I should say something on behalf of gaming in 3D. Except I've never played a game in 3D and can't even imagine what it is like.
