Now, I've always been an odd person. People have always known me for that, but I'm only considered odd because of my tastes in just about everything. People cringe when I suggest putting pickles on a pizza slice. People lift their brow when I doodle various pictures of various characters that I enjoy doodling, but I've always been accepted none the less. I'm not the most popular person around, but I'm reasonable well liked, and it doesn't bother me when people call me strange. I'd rather be weird then be a robot.
But I found one opinion both rude, and ignorant.
As stated earlier, people always find my tastes questionable. My taste in music is no exception. I picked up Super Mario Galaxy 2 a couple of weeks ago, and I was really digging the music to it. I had to try very hard not to hum it in public. So I decided to load up my mp3 with various songs from the game. So I'm just sitting there, enjoying the music I was listening to. One of my friends asked what I was listening to. People often found what I listen to strange, so I simply stated, "Oh, something odd." To which he replied, "Probably Mario or techno or something. That isn't real music. Real music has lyrics."
I felt rather sour towards him after he made that comment. "So you think you can justify whether or not something is music? Music is just a series of sounds, after all. Am I not justified to my own opinion?" "You'd have to be on crack to enjoy THAT."
He not only told me that he hated my music, but he practically said that I was likely on drugs for liking such atrocious music. Do you think he was justified? I don't mind people questioning my tastes, but insulting me directly because of what I like is pretty inexcusable. I choose to like what I like. I've never hated mainstream music, but I simply never got into it like things that I've played games to. Maybe I've always just found video game music to be more upbeat and overall perks my mood.
Am I over-reacting, or was my reaction justified?
