My PS3 overheats pretty easily.

My PlayStation 3 and I do not get along very well. My PS3 has this nasty habit of kicking the fans up to 100% power right on start-up. Occasionally it'll wait a while, but eventually it'll hit max speed. It makes enough noise to be heard all the way downstairs, even if I close the door. After a while it'll give me the notification that it's about to overheat, and asks me to shut it down. If left unattended, it'll shut down on it's own.

This wasn't such a huge fuss in the winter, when I could just keep my window open and it would be almost completely silent. Was cold as all hell (-5 Celsius, indoors ;D ), but at least I could play my games. Now that it's summertime, the old gal can't keep up.

I've tried vacuuming it, and I've always kept it so that it has access to air. I've also tried it both vertically and horizontally. The console itself is an original 60 gig PAL. I've had the machine for maybe two or three years, of which it has been used for two.

Any advice, fellas?

Ugh get a fat version. I have mine sitting on the ground sideways on carpet and there is now a dog living here and my fans kick to high gear sometimes but i've never got an overheat message even after hours of play.

Jokingly get some of those ice packs(that obviously don't have ice) and slip them under the machine after its been running for awhile. Switch out after awhile.

Really it sounds like the first time your system overheated it melted something in the console or fucked up one fan. Try sending it in for a flat rate of 150 or wait for it completely break to send it in still flat rate. I think your problem is permanent.

Wow, not the only person to have this problem haha!

Mine was a 20GB classic one. It YLOD'D before, I fixed it, and a month or so later it started to act up.

I tried everything, but it packed up aaaand...
...I bought a new one.

As far as I'm aware, it's some kind of problem with the motherboard, and I don't think it can be repaired:/.
I bought a new one the day the PSN went down, too. Fml.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news though, mate:/.

For God's sake; NEVER put a system on a carpet. Why would you even do that?

Carpets have static electricity in them; I don't think you need a flowchart here.

Judging by the replies, I guess I better get myself a new PS3. I was mostly just looking to save some money on it. If I return it to the store, they'll charge me 250 euros and just give me a new "fatty" PS3 (this happened when my old consoled Yellowed on me), so I'll just buy myself a slim instead.

Anyways, thank you all for helping me make up my mind. Next month's paycheck better be a fat one. ;D
