THINK I POSTED THIS IN THE WRONG SECTION..
RIFT is the premium, next-generation MMO that contains everything a gamer expects to find in a top-quality fantasy game
This overview of Rift: Planes of Telara takes place during Beta 6
Upon starting the game my buddy and I had to make a choice between Guardians and Defiance. Guardians are your usual fantasy based races, elves, dwarf, humans; while Defiance have the Eth (humans basically) Kelari, which look like Drow and the Bahmi (big giant blueberries). Dwarfs were the obvious choice for what we had planned. I played around with the soul talent trees, much like WoWs talent trees, prior to this beta and we decided to play rogues, specifically bards.
Lvl 1-6
At the start we?re greeted by an angel with bladed gloves who gives us our first quest for our first Soul (talent tree). Now since my dwarf?s name was ?Jackblack? and my friends name was ?Kylegass? we of course picked the bard class which allowed us to go around killing quest mobs with a strum of our lutes while listening to ?Master Exploder? by Tenacious D. Now I have to admit that this class should be nerfed, because it is far to fun to play, its awesomeness level needs to be toned down by at least 50%. That being said Questing in this game is nothing new or revolutionizing but rather the usual collect this, go kill X amount of mobs, and go deliver this note from point A to point B and continue questing as normal, I really shouldn?t complain though since the leveling pace flows smoothly and there?s always new scenery to take in while I and Kylegass rock our way through quest after quest, the town is in flames and there are ghouls and giant knights terrorizing the citizens while a giant death rift looms in the distance sprouting dark tentacles and hordes of undead out of its core. Our various tasks were fun and well thought out from going out into the battle field killing our share of undead, launching a catapult, protecting a magic orb from some baddies, taking out a mini boss, cleansing a shade touched horse which we then got to ride into battle stampeding through a good sized amount of skeletons and finally participating in a rift that upon completion ended our time in the starting zone dropping us in the main land.
Lvl 6-10
Hokay so more quests which require more killing of X, using items on Y, going from point A to point B. Here?s where things get a little more interesting, so Kyle and I now have a points in a talent called ?Invigorated Soul? which makes it so every time we strum our guitars not only do we do DMG we also heal everyone in the party/raid for the damage we deal, this in turn makes so we never get hurt as long as we keep on rocking; along with our muscal buffs, that are common place with bards, this talent makes us great support classes to have in any group. Along the way we picked up the Riftstalker soul which is the tank role for rogues (yeah rogues can tank) this gave us a handy teleport to use when things weren?t looking to good. Nightblade was our 3rd choice; a rogue class that also uses magic, think Spelltheives. Taking this allowed for our combo point generating abilities to deal more damage by a certain percentage resulting in bigger heals. On the main land rifts opened up randomly, allowing us to take a break from questing, join a bigger group and play our music to anyone willing to listen all the while shouting ?WE ARE THE D!!!? in chat.
LVL 10-16
More questing and participating in rifts gets us to lvl 10, opening up the ability to join 10-19lvl battle grounds, more on that later. We catch our selves wandering around when text starts to flash on our screens warning of a rift invasion; I open my map and see about 20 fire rifts. Our plan of action was originally to find some shelter and wait it out, thinking we weren?t the proper levels to help out, little did we know that these invasions also imply that patrols will spread out across the land attacking outposts, leaving almost no place safe. Luckily just as our main quest hub was being ravished by monsters from the plane of fire and the mighty D caught helplessly between two rifts a raid of 40 players erupt from the road cutting down the baddies, naturally we joined in and helped quell the invasion rewarding those who participated some goodies including planar shards which can be cashed in for armor, weapons and other rare items. To end our last day playing beta we decided to do The Black Garden, a PvP battle ground that reminded me of oddball from Halo except the longer you hold the shard the more damage you take from it and the closer you hold it to the center the more points you receive. This was extremely fun since there was never a delay on action, everyone was always hitting someone and the constant mobbing for the shard resulted in some interesting game play.
Conclusion
I really enjoyed rift, it takes all the features of a successful game such as WoW and adds in its own little twist to keep things interesting. I for one have been looking for a new game to hold my interest and I think I found it. I?m extremely impressed with the level of customization and possible soul combinations given to the players, as well as the content that I have experienced so far. Now while I do feel that the rift spawns will become increasingly boring, maybe even resulting in rift grinding for certain epics, that is not all the game seems to offer. I did get to try Iron Tombs on my Kelari Warrior which is the first dungeon at lvl 17, and let me just say it had some interesting mechanics to it that was a break from the usual tank and spank. If that is any evidence to what the higher level content will be like, consider me hooked, I?ve already pre-ordered
TL;DR? I personally enjoyed my playtime in Rift?s beta, if you are looking for a new MMO check it out, it?s certainly starting to look like one of the best out there.
