Something wierd happens to me with about every RPG I play (especially JRPG's).
I get really in to them and then get distracted and don't play them again for a long time (and usually forget the plot and just restart), but on my second time through I usually play all the way to the end.

The worst case ever was with the first JRPG I ever beat Final Fantasy 7.
I played until Cosmo Canyon and then kept getting glitches and didn't play it again for about A YEAR. Then I played all the way through loved it and beat 2 of the 3 weapons.

The same happened with Final Fantasy 9 for about 6 months then I picked it back up but played to the same point and put it down again.
the part after the card game tournament when the princess loses her voice
.

The same happened again in Fallout 3. I put it down for months then picked it up, played to the end, and am now on my 2nd playthrough.

So my question is this, does this happen to any of you and do you know why this happens and what I should do about it?

Oh my god.

This has happened to be so many times. Difference is, when I drop it, I never go back.

You see, I used to try and 100% JRPGs during the first playthrough. An evil, evil task.

I'd be at the last save point before the "point-of-no-return", you know. This means it's the time when I start doing the 100% busywork. And then I decide I'll take a break from the game for a week. Turns out...A week means forever.

To this day, the only Final Fantasy that I have actually beat the final boss of is...

Final Fantasy 13.

I have played Final Fantasy 7 to the final dungeon, 8 to the final dungeon, and 10 to the final dungeon. 10-2 to the final dungeon. And 9 to the third disc. Lost Odyssey, Legend of Dragoon, and Chrono Trigger to the final dungeon, too. Wild ARMs 1, 2, and 3 all at the final dungeon. Actually, I almost beat 3. But the power went out 45 minutes into the final boss fight. Rage prevented completion.

But don't you dare say my opinions on those games are invalid. I sunk 50+ hours into each of them.

I loved each of those games. Just not enough to 100% or finish them.

I usually try and beat most RPgs the first time through, mainly just because its so hard to get back into them, it really is frustrating to have to remember how the battle systems work in that particular game, not tomention most of the time I forgett what was going on at that point in the story completely. Oddly enough though this only tends to heppen to me with JRPGs.

Wow, this exact same thing happens to me all the time. I played Final Fantasy VII to the final dungeon, then put it down for ages. Then I got it on the PSN so I could play it on my PSP, and played it all the way through, final boss and all. Same thing with Final Final Fantasy I: Played the Origins version a bit, dropped it, then played Dawn of Souls all the way through.

I think this happens to a lot of people, mainly because RPGs tend to take a lot of time, and within that time, new games come out that you want to try, so you put the game down for a bit. It's even worse if the new games are RPGs are well.

Right now I'm still trying to juggle FFs II, V, VI, VIII, and XII, as well as SMT Nocturne, Persona 3 FES, and Devil Summoner. FF V, VI, and VIII have been particularly neglected despite how badly I want to play them.

My suggestion? Don't really worry about it too much. If it really bothers you, make a conscious effort to finish the game before dropping it, or regularly remind yourself to make a little progress so you don't forget what happened and have to start over.

It happened to me twice with FF9. Once just after the stage where the fog/mist is lifted, and once in what I think was the final dungeon (I'd kind of lost track of the plot by that point) so I never did finish that game.

Dragon Age: Origins is currently heading the same way. I should probably go back to it, but so many games, so little time...
