Art sucked me out of gaming, and I'm glad it did.

Gaming is still close to me --most of the commissions I take are comic book and video game characters. I recently did a large rendering of the first colossus from SotC, as one example. I keep up to date with games as best I can but my actual gaming is down. I don't think I've fondled my Playstation in two weeks now.

It's still a hobby sometimes, just no longer the time-eating headcrab it used to be.

I think it happens to everybody.

I had a phase where I stopped wanting to play PC games, so I went to bed and woke up the next day, and it had passed. I am 25, and I work for a living. I save up a lot of money to buy a house soon, but I spend part of it on PC game software and a couple PS3 titles that I felt were must have, like GTA IV and Starwars Force Unleashed. With new games coming out like Spore, and Farcry 2, and Fallout 3, how can you not want to game every chance you get. I know I do because I don't get those chances too often.

i kinda go thru phases, you'll probly find this too. i had one time where i watched only certain things, played little video games, times where i was hardcore gaming. i played a lot of pc games cause i had no console or played consoles cause i didn't have a good enough pc

now my gaming has mostly been on the ps3, haven't had a lot of pc games that really got me addicted, WoW kinda sucked a lot of that out. heck i play games for a bit, longer games i take a break from or when i get bored of parts of it, started on mgs4 cause i was a bit bored of gta iv

as for me i got a ton of movies to watch, still, a ton of books, just ordered more and i got a whole lot of warhammer fantasy miniatures and other ones i can paint, tho i think i need new paint.

i applaud you for doing other things, it's always healthy to do that cause then you are more interesting instead of a one dimensional person, it's something you'll find as you get older. you are growing up a bit and won't always like doing the same things as you did as a kid

Funny, the only game you mentioned that I have any interest in is Spore, and the demo wouldn't work on my computer for some reason (maybe Vista related, I don't know) so I'm weary about getting that. The only games left this year for me are Tales of Symphonia 2 and Left 4 Dead, which I'll get for birthday/Christmas. And at this rate Vesperia will last me the year anyway.

Sometimes I all of a sudden find games very uninteresting and decide to dedicate some time to learning some of my fancy programs, like

Damn it's good to see that i'm not the only person here that feels like they are wasting their time on games.
They are getting boring and can not hold my interest for more than a few minutes.
Plus that sort of hollow feeling inside when I do play them.

The pursuit of knowledge is entertaining! I like to study physics in my spare time but I still manage to get an hour or two of gaming in each day, I don't work, I'm a student. :)

I think this happened to me while I was still in high school as well. As my passion for reading and learning increased, my passion for things like TV, video games, and movies decreased. I found myself voracious for learning and experiencing new things and the trivial stuff just seemed distracting or irritating. These days, I may watch 30 minutes to an hour of TV a week. Sometimes I'll go several without turning it on, although my girlfriend enjoys watching it at times. I'm more interested in going out and doing stuff, diving into a good book, be it fiction or non-fiction, and learning has never grown into a passion (well, except for when I was taking college algebra. Stupid college algebra). And, I'm lucky. My girlfriend enjoys it as much as I and we have some awesome deep and long conversations. Video games are fun now and then, especially when some of my buds come over. But, for the most part, I'd rather be doing something constructive.

In answer to your question, I think it shows that you're definitely maturing and that's OK. You can be mature, but still be a kid at heart. It doesn't mean that you're getting older, it means that you're growing wiser. I had an 70 year old prof. in graduate school (he was one of my favorites) who told me that he was working on his fifth doctorate degree. When I asked him why, he said, "When you stop finding the world amazing and trying to learn about it, you start growing old. My body may be 70, but my mind is 20!"

Ah, Photoshop. I recently acquired a copy and have been delving through it's incredible depths for many an hour.

Probably the only instance where this isn't the case is Peter Pan. Not the character (hardy har har), but the story. I've seen the movies, a play and even read the novel, and I still can't grow out of it.

I don't think that learning and computer games are mutually exclusive pastimes, and I think it's perfectly possible to balance the two without losing sight of one or the other.
To be fair, it's not a case of finding the time. It's a case of having the time and devoting to something other than gaming.

I did try a Photoshop trial at one point. Most of my creations tend to suck but it was still pretty fun. But it felt like a real suction of time. I pulled an all-nighter because I was in the middle of something and didn't want to stop, so it's not something that I think would be a smart buy for me.

i wish i could say i cared more about learning than gaming, but i just couldn't care less about learning, maybe because everything my school tries to teach is completely useless.
School is more about learning to think, than about actual knowledge.
Not in America. In America it's usually shunned-upon to think.

'Nyway. I used to spend crazy amounts of time playing Guitar Hero. I would stay up until almost 4 in the morning. Now I read twice as much as I used to. I find way more interest in politics and political history than in video games.

If I play video games anymore it is because I'm with friends. My taste in music has changed as well. I'm not sure if that's related, but I need to be able to hear what the singer's saying in order to listen to it. Classic Rock and the like.

So, I understand the gamer-to-quasi-intellectual thing.

I've recently discovered something about myself. I'm a sophomore in high school and I've recently started seeking knowledge more than entertainment. I'll use video games to show what I mean. I recently purchased Tales of Vesperia, because I loved Symphonia. Now unlike Symphonia, or any game I purchased before this summer, I'm going through it incredibly slow. I can no longer justify spending more than half an hour playing video games a day. I'm now a "casual" gamer by any definition. I stop myself and think "I should be doing something more productive." Last night I chose to outline a chapter in my History textbook over doing something "entertaining", and I've been doing that more and more with no real motivation besides just deciding to. I only watch TV if I feel like I'm learning something, so I only watch news channels, Discovery, or History Channel anymore. The only exceptions being Survivor, American Idol, and Battlestar Galactica. I never saw too many movies before so that hasn't changed much. But something definitely changed recently.

The appeal seems to have disappeared. I'm more interested in learning and improving myself myself than seeking entertainment from these sources that I used to love but a couple years ago. I spend most of my time that I'm online researching things by choice. I've always considered myself mature (or at least more so than other people my age) but is this me becoming "truly" mature? Am I just being more responsible? Or is this just my interests changing and finding out who I am?

So did this happen to you at some point?
That's actually how I became who I am today. Get into a good college, though, or your own friends will disgust you.

I read and then studied Friedrich Nietzsche his writings has turned my life around. I owe so much to that man and his philosophy on life I wouldn't be the same without it. Any person who wants knowledge simply must read Nietzsche beneath the words lies the path to it.

P.S The problem is most people want knowledge but few truly want it enough to sacrifice what they think they believe in to attain it.

Gaming is a hobby. Hobbies shouldn't control our lives. We should take a break every so often or play less. We need to communicate face to face with others and experience the world around us. Like educating ourselves, going for walks, socialising etc.

What do you mean disgusted? The history channel is awesome. Although I do wish they could focus on something other than world war two for a while.

I'm still pretty damn immature, so no, the quest for knowledge has not yet overweighed the quest for fun.
