my volume button crahses games!

i need help!
when ever i play a old pc game on my laptop and i adjust my volume it crashes the game.
i have win 7 on a hp pavilion entertainment pc. i upgraded from vista because of other audio issues. i try to play games like half life and ff7 and 8. can someone help?

try adjusting the volume settings in control panel before starting the games. also try closing background programs.

i closed all of my background programs and that didn't and i usually adjust the volume before opening the game

yelling didn't help it only made my family stare at my funny...

Try restarting the computer.

Opening MSN used to pause every music, youtube video, other stuff I had open when I selected it's window.
I restarted, and BAM.
Works dandy

the thing is this has bean doing this to me for like a month so i don't think a simple restart or shutdown will help. but thanks!
