Yeah, so my xbox has 1 red ring of death, and it isn't in warranty. I got it about a year after it came out. Anways, got the E74 error, which if I'm correct means theres something wrong with the AV. I bought a HDMI cable in the hope that it would fix it, but it still has one red ring. Is there anything else I could do to try and fix it besides sending it to microsoft?

According to your profile, you live in England (High five(and your name's Ben(High five))), so I would suggest plugging it in, taking it out, making sure everything's in the right place, then if that doesn't work going down to your local GAME and getting a warranty for £20. No questions asked, nothing to worry about.

The title made me want to sing "brings all the boys to the yard" so bad...

E74 is nothing to do with the cables you use. It's the GPU. I had the same thing.

E74 is just a fancier way of saying RRoD. Happened to me not long ago. Sent my Xbox in for repairs, and they just sent me a brand new one within two weeks instead. So I was rather pleased.

E74 is covered by the extended warranty they added for such issues. Lasts three or four years I think.
Oh thanks! I think I'll send it off then now I know I don't have to pay. :) And I'll be getting warranty afterwards just in case.

Yeah I'm only sending it to Microsoft if I have to.
Microsoft, or Microsoft via the shop you bought it from.

Out of warranty you're options are limited. You might get lucky and get a free or cheap repair, they might charge you full cost, which might turn out to be not much, you won't know without trying. Asking nicely always helps.

Worst case scenario, you send it in, they want a lot of cash, you say no thanks and have to buy a new machine. No worse than if you do nothing and need a new machine anyway.

What's wrong with sending it in to microsoft? They take care of it fast and for free.

It's cool, although I don't remember you whining to me before (I tend to not read names when I help people, sorry)

Yeah, but I think that's only with 3.
And you are correct.

Indeed, it had the bent motherboard chip or whatever it was. A launch disease from the fresh consoles.

No, my standard warranty (2 years) was expired, and they sent me a new 360 for free when I got the E74 error and two red lights.
Oh.

Wel they wouldn't when I got mine.

The douchebags.

So you got it in 2006 right?

That means you're out of the 3 year warrenty for RROD and E74. Unless you can post a actual manufacturing date.

You can always try fixing it yourself unless you have no experience in it. Then I suggest either finding someone who can or Microsoft or just buying a new xbox.
