I just literally recieved an email from a person who calls themselves "Miss Caroline".

obviously when someone you've never seen or heard of before sends you an email, you should delete it on the spot, I'm no idiot, I did exactly that.

Now, I'm used to strange emails from mysterious origins, be they women interested in being with me, regardless of colour or distance, or be they rich foriegners with mroe money than sense, perfectly willing to let you, the first person they pointed at in an international phonebook have all their money.

So of course, I'm not weirded out about this.

The more concerning matter is that after coming from my emails to here, I noticed I had a message, From someone calling themselves Caroline20, no posts, nothing, They're a faceless nobody with no recent activity besides friends requests and messages.

This person contacted me on this website, asking me again, if I would consider falling in love with them.

As soon as I saw this, I thought the first best thing to do would be look around for threads about it, seems there was none.

So I thought I'd put this up here, keep a few of you in the know.

Escapist, seems we have some scammers/keyloggers roaming the boards.

Scary stuff.

I haven't picked up anything on this, perhaps we should get Anon on the case.

I remember someone else saying something similar a couple of weeks ago... unfortunately, I can't remember who said it or who they said it was from. You're not the only one, though.

I think I heard about this once, with some un-active user on the Escapist e-mailing someone. Sounded like spam, which I assume is what you are facing.

EDIT: As above me said.

One phrase.

EXTREMELY WEIRD STALKER.

Honestly, if she aquired your email, then found you on a forum, she's tracking you somehow. Maybe via an I.P. adress or something, some people are very clever. Nothing on the internet is secret.

Yeah, I got that private message too. Deleted it, of course. I don't really understand what this kind of spam is about. Is it a variant of the Nigerian scam, where eventually they will ask you to send money or even go bring it somewhere? Weird stuff anyway.

I also got a mail from Ms Caroline (or was it a PM...can't remember).

In any case, yeah, I'm an expert on phony junk mail cause I've gotten so...many

Some of these are sad-but-true-, but anyways; it's junk mail if:

1. They're -way- too friendly. "Hey man! REMEMBER ME?! :D"
2. They sound like in -any way- they're trying to sell something
3. It's some stranger 'hot-chick' that wants to 'hang out'
4. Someone wants your sublet! But the deal is -way- too favorable for you. Oh yeah, and also, he's at India at the moment, and needs $2,000 so he can reach his 'secret account' after he buys a plane ticket.
5. You've WON A MILLION DOLLARS JUST LOG IN TO GET IT!
6. You've won..err.... ANYTHING! FREE IPOD. Just log in to...
..no

Congratulations, I bet you feel warm and tingly right now, don't you?

Back on topic, I realised from the start that I wouldn't have been the only person affected by this, And despite, genuinely searching for a prior topic, I guess searching for "Strange emails and messages" just wasn't enough to find the original topic, Oh well, at least this has some-what helped to boost awareness.

The account is just a spamming account. I got one from the same account when I started on the Escapist. Just report the account and move on.

When you give your email to places (don't think so here but anyway) there's usually a button to tick saying that you don't want your email to be sent to third party companies/websites etc. If it isn't checked, the site you give the email to assume you have given them permission to do this, so EVENTUALLY, you'll get random emails from random people/companies.
I have one from some "woman" in Russia who "want to come to England and make with me big family"

I can't explain the message on here though... Strange.

But yea always look for the little check box and it should keep your inbox(es) cleaner.
