Oh god, I just played Hatoful Boyfriend, and now I have to talk about it. Just a summary: It's a parody of Japanese dating sims in which all the bachelors are pigeons, but it's so well written that eventually you forget that they're pigeons and pretty soon I was bawling like a baby. It is the best dating sim that I have ever played, if not one of the best game stories I've seen.

Don't read it if you plan on getting the game, and I highly suggest you do. It's one of the best $5 I've ever spent. Here's a hilarious let's play of the demo. [http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=67529]

The ending is bittersweet if anything, but basically to summarize: the player character dies very early on in the "real" storyline, and the rest unfolds as a murder mystery. So there is this orphan kid, Nageki, who was a carrier for a virus that killed all humans in contact with him, so the school doctor Shuu (who is evil) recruited him to do research. He got tired of being used to kill humans and he committed suicide.

Nageki's older brother Nanaki bleached his feathers out of grief and became a teacher at the school so he could wait until the perfect time to get revenge, but he's constantly haunted forever by a shadow of Nageki. Shuu wanted to preserve the virus so he injected it into the player character's childhood friend, Ryouta, who is the son of Shuu's old lover who died a long time ago.

When Ryouta was a kid, he witnessed the player character's parents get murdered in a big raid on Nageki's orphanage, and he wished to a stranger (Shuu) that humans and birds could coexist peacefully. Shuu, being some fucked up genie, became determined to fulfill that wish by completely eradicating the human race, so he plans to weaponize Ryouta. To start, he engineered it so that Ryouta killed the player character. And the player character was a government guinea pig to test if humans could peacefully coexist with birds in a high school setting, so after she died, the experiment failed and they put the entire school on lockdown. After the lockdown is over, Shuu is going to release Ryouta to infect the (apparently) forming raging mob of humans outside.

And then Nanaki finds out that Nageki is currently Ryouta's liver, and has a breakdown and almost murders Ryouta to get to it and has to be talked down by the joke character.

Meanwhile there's a bird that's a racist dickbag, Sakuya, who was indoctrinated by his father when he was young that he is a noble bird and everyone else is inferior, including his half-brother Yuuya, but he really wants to be a musician but can't because only commoners play music.

But then you find out that Sakuya's father took over Yuuya's mother's nest and ordered all her eggs from Yuuya's father to be kicked out and crushed. But Yuuya didn't want this so he saved of his brothers (Sakuya) and planted him in the nest so he could grow up to be wealthy and happy, and he destroyed the other egg. So Sakuya has a BSOD because as he just finds this out, Yuuya sacrifices himself for Sakuya from Shuu who was going to kill Sakuya because he outlived his usefulness. So the brother he's hated his entire life just saved his life for the second time and he's not really nobility.

So Nanaki shoots Shuu to death and they all escape except for Ryouta, who they leave frozen in the lab because he's a danger to society, and he'll sleep with the ghost of the player character until technology evolves enough to cure the virus from him.

Also they're pigeons.

I haven't played Diablo 2 for a while, so my memory might be a little fuzzy, but doesn't the hero of Diablo 1 become the main villain of Diablo 2?

EDIT: also, Tristram gets SCREWED in Diablo 2.

I got pretty worked up at the end of Ratchet & Clank: Crack in Time.

Ratchet sacrifices being reunited with the rest of his race for the sake of the entire universe and the only other Lombax he knows dies to redeem himself.

It's hard to get properly emotional about since they're cartoon animals, but it's still pretty powerful, in my opinion.

You bunch of wussies. Do you know what all those games you mentioned have in common? You still have the sense that you did good things. Your character's journey has ended, but the world is a better place through their sacrifice. You want a game with a sad ending? One where things would actually be better if your main character just never even bothered? Try freaking Nier!

In his attempts to reunite with his daughter, Nier has essentially doomed the human species to extinction, and in order to save Kaine's life, he sacrifices his own life so thoroughly that he's been wiped out entirely from existance to the degree that it completely wipes out your own save, and no one remembers him! God DAMN it Cavia!

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go play Return to Dreamland. Nier always puts me in a dark place mentally.
Listen to this man! He speaks the truth!

You play through the game, and near the end you realize what's been going on and feel horrible, especially when you take the time to think about it. Then you start up the second playthrough (As anyone who plays this game probably should), and the whole damn time you are playing , its almost constantly depressing since the game puts additional cutscenes into the story. The ending makes you feel worse, but there is just one good thing about it that brings a smile to your face. The game realizes this and says, "Oh how cute, you smiled. I can smile too. Go get the other endings." And you do. And...goddammit Nier.

Love the game though. Recommend it a lot! Felt really depressed every time I stopped playing, which was weird, but at the same time I liked it. Oh well, at least the music was super awesome. Shame I never got all the trophies though.

Haven't played it in a long time myself but yeah, i'm about 90% sure you're right, which makes the ending of the first one even worse because now you know your character failed and started even more problems.

The ending of legacy of kain: defiance.
No matter how hard Raziel tries to avoid his fate of becoming the insane soul of the soul reaver it still happens making his struggle and defiance of mobius and the elder god ultimately fruitless

I know it might seem stupid to get emotional over pixels, but the end of ME3 tore me up. After three entire games with the same character, you form a bond with your shepard, and she died whataver you did. unless you believe the indoc theory.

Sin is destroyed forever, but Tidus fades away... and NO, FFX-2 does not exist I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!
Especially if Roman is the one to die. I had no affection whatsoever for Kate.
The only ending that actually makes sense is In Water, so I consider that one canon. I cry every time even though it's so badly edited.
Basically any Ethan ending where Shaun dies, but especially "Tears in the Rain". Say what you want about that game's story deficiencies, but this scene is unbearably sad.
As for Silent Hill 2 (I apologize, I am a lore nazi) every single one of the endings fits the lore of the series, save DOG. Yes, even the UFO ending. The LEAVE ending makes sense because he succeeded in beating the town's trap. The MARIA ending makes sense because he falls right into the trap, setting himself up for repeating history. The UFO endings fit within the campy side-continuity that unifies all the characters in a singular force against the Town. The REBIRTH ending is ultimately the town manipulating him towards their goals of releasing the Old Gods upon the world. All these themes fit within the series mythos at large. The only ending that makes no sense at all is DOG, and that's intentional.

Anyway, time to be on-topic! Shadow of the Colossus, definitely. I also got a tiny bit teary-eyed in Journey, but that was the blizzard zone. Metal Gear Solid 4, when you actually think he's pulled the trigger on himself. FF7: Crisis Core, making what was a minute of cutscene in the PS1 game into a truly tragic moment of self-sacrifice against unbeatable odds. Honorable mention: In Dead Space 2, at the end, Isaac's feeling of despair as his only means of escape was gone managed to rub off on me a little. Mo teariness, but I did feel a little sad.

MOTHER 3 has one of the saddest endings I've ever seen in a game. You need to kill your brother to save the world from a tyrannical, sadistic overlord and his empire. In addition to this, the ghost of your mother who died earlier in the game comes to try and persuade your brother out of the emotionless, robot-like state he's in that made him want to kill you before either you or him get killed.

Odin sphere

The ending can vary, depending on the characters you use for the the five final battles. In the good ending Ragnarok happens, Mercedes dies, Gwendalin and Oswald are the only humans left and have to repopulate the earth, Cornelius remains cursed ,as well as Valentine, and have to collect all the coins from Valentine's country in order to regain their human bodies.

Both endings of inFAMOUS 2 nearly made me tear up a bit. I'd also like to mention Crisis Core. (The Final Fantasy 7 prequel) It took real talent to make the ending sad even though I already knew Zack was going to die.

Conker's Bad Fur Day
Nothing would have prepared anyone for this. After you've gone through nine chapters of complete and total nonsense that doesn't seem to be getting anywhere, Conker's girlfriend, Berri, is suddenly killed by Weasel, who you were just starting to think you could trust. Once the xenomorph pops out of The Panther King's chest, a battle comes forth between it and Conker, who are in space. Conker thinks he's starting to win the fight, but the xenomorph lets out one great pounce and-

. . .

The game freezes up. Everything is frozen, except Conker, himself. He asks a programmer to help him out with this fight, and he won't tell anyone there's been a "lockup". He gets some weapons, relocates to a throne room and beheads the beast. The Panther King's previous subjects praise him for his victory and make him the new king. At this point, Conker realizes he should have asked the programmer to bring Berri back to life. But he's gone. Now, he's trapped far from home, the only person he ever loved is dead and he's surrounded by subjects that he has come to despise over the course of his misadventures.

"The grass is 'always' greener. And you don't really know what you have... until it's gone. Gone... gone....."

Due to how happy-go-lucky and comical the game was up until this point, along with the lesson it goes to teach and even heart-breaking credits music, this ending really hit hard. And Conker's still stuck there... miserable.

Sonic Adventure 2
No one would have expected that the ARK had a defense mechanism that once all seven chaos emeralds had been put into place, The BioLizard; the prototype of the ultimate lifeform, would be released and connect itself to the Eclipse Cannon, pulling it to Earth, destroying all life. There would be no world left to save... or conquer. Thus, the heroes and villains join side-by-side to fight a common enemy. When Sonic and Shadow take on their super forms, they go out to take out the last of the beast before the colony impacts. However, since Shadow has been without use of chaos energy for 50 years, and pulling very small doses over the past couple days or so, this huge burst of full transformation energy, along with teleporting an entire space station such a far distance (even with Sonic's help), it was too much for his body to handle, and he gave out. The ultimate life of one for the lives of all. He had fulfilled Maria's wish.

Everyone reflects on what just happened around them, wondering if this was truly anything much like what Shadow was created for. What anyone could possibly have had in mind all those years ago, how all this came to be the way it unfolded and how they might carry on. It was truly touching, being respectful, meaningful and concluding what many believe to be the greatest Sonic game of all time.

My main problem with the Leave ending is
Laura. Why the fuck would she follow her friend's murderer? She did warm up a bit to James, but all that was destroyed when she learned he killed Mary. She would never accept to follow him, much less be adopted by him.
And as for the Maria one,
James must really be a fucking idiot to embrace Maria. By that point he most assuredly knows what she is. I agree with your point, but I just can't picture James as such a moron.
And I forgot about the Rebirth one. I guess that one makes some amount of sense.
And lol@UFO.

Anyway, even though the game's creators mentioned that there was no true canon ending for 2, SH3 and 4 seem to make references to In Water having really happened: Douglas never found "the guy he was looking for" (presumably James) and Frank never saw his son again.

Sad Endings? I don't think it gets much sadder than the end to Red Dead Redemption....

John Marston ends up getting killed for his past, even though he's done his best to redeem himself and to settle down and start anew. He manages to save the lives of his son and wife, but Abigail dies a couple years after he does, and Jack does what his father most certainly did NOT want him to do: follow in his footsteps.

It's really sad. from just the hopelessness of John's last playable sequence to the sadness of seeing his grave, and then seeing his wife's grave right next to it. But perhaps the saddest thing is going through the game's final quest, leading Jack to finally avenging his father, and just finding out about Edgar Ross (John's killer), and then finally killing him. Even as he falls in the duel, the victory seems hollow, and you don't really feel like you've won, just like you've led Jack to becoming what his father desperately wanted him to avoid: an outlaw, just like dear old dad, back in the day.
This. A thousand times this. You beat me to the punch. I loved that game and that ending made me angry at the unfairness of it all!

I'll go for the oddball answer, the end of the Phoenix Wright trilogy. Once you pick up Appollo justice it becomes clear that Phoenix didn't get the girl (any of them), lost his badge, and the whole world looks like it's just been it by some sort of bad-taste apocalypse.

anyways, I thought one of the most depressing endings was from Deadly Premonition.

I thought it was very depressing that every time I got closer to saving a girl's life they all suffered in some horrible way I personally could never live with. I didn't like how the game had many plot holes, but in particular the final girl Emily who I had to kill in order to "save" her just cut me pretty deep. Ultimately I felt that I had failed. I even tried not shooting Emily and tried shooting that fat tub of lard Kaysen who had just ruined so many lives. Till I was eventually forced to shoot Emily. Then I just ride off into the sunset!
See, i can never get depressed by that game because when ever it makes you sad, you just watch the unskippable episode and laugh at the monkey/squirrel hybrids ^^

ME3 isn't sad, just depressing.

Every single jenny scene in the Darkness 2 pulled my heart strings while also making me unbearably paranoid. Considering how violent and vulgar the game-play is, the story was amazingly done.

I think FF tactics and with it most Tactics ogre endings tend be rather sad and/or bittersweet at the very least..

Also the demon path end to Soul Nomad was pretty damned sad no matter which way you went with it.

Assassin's Creed Revelations.
While the ending wasn't that sad, the way both Altair and Ezio, you know...
die...
I'll admit, manly tears were shed for both of them.
