Yes, this is a name your favorite game thread, but with a M. Night Shyamalan twist. It has to be PSOne era or earlier.
To assist you in what game systems you can use, I'll supply a list.
*Atari
*Nintendo
*Sega Master System
*Sega Genesis
*Super Nintendo
*Sega 32X
*Sega CD
*Jaguar
*Nintendo 64
*Sega Saturn
*Sega Dreamcast
*Nintendo Gameboy/Gameboy Color
*Sega GameGear
*Sony Playstation (PSone/PSX)
I'm sure I missed one of your favorite old school systems, but I feel that this list is pretty comprehensive. Also, PC gamers, don't feel like out. Feel free to post whatever games you like that were made before the year 2000, just for an easy reference point.
So, now for some of my favorite old-school games.
Super Mario 3-Nintendo
This should go without saying. It was one of the best Mario games on the Nintendo. Perhaps one of the best Mario games ever. Lots of odd worlds, lots of power-ups, lots of time killed playing this game. Oh, sure it made no sense (a feather gave you a raccoon tail that allowed you to fly...), but what self respecting gamer doesn't love this game?
Sonic 3-Sega Genesis
Just like Mario Sonic's best game ever was the third installment. Lots of cool shield power-ups, Knuckles, cool levels, and holy crap Tails can fly and carry Sonic! The game only got better if you connected it to Sonic & Knuckles allowing you to play one uber-long game, Transform into Hyper Sonic and ever Super Tails (a cruel slave master who let little birds kill his foes for him). Yes, this was Sonic at his best. Before 3D, before annoying sidekicks like Big, before Sonic became a laughingstock.
Comix Zone-Sega Genesis
What a concept! You play a person trapped inside a comic book. You fight monsters with superhuman martial arts while tearing up and jumping through the pages of a comic. I'm not aware of another game like this. It's just too bad I never managed to beat it.
Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000-Sega 32X
An odd little game. You played a small little ship and fought hordes of enemies. You died in a single hit and had a weak little gun, so you were pretty much screwed. Did I mention you could jump on and hack into enemy ships allowing you to use their firepower, speed and armor against them? Yeah, I probably should mention that. That little gimmick is why I list this game. It was insanely fun to try out different ships, and use their own weapons against them.
Brave Fencer Musashi-Sony Playstation
The Kingdom of Allucaneet is under attack by the Thirstquencher Empire. In their desperate time Princess Fillet uses the Hero Summon spell to summon a legendary hero to save them. They got Musashi, a young obnoxious brat. He must acquire the Legendary sword, Lumina, the sword of Luminescence, gain the power of the five scrolls, save countless castle dwellers, who were captured and left scattered in various crystals throughout the land, all while fighting the Thirstquencher Empire, who wants Lumina for their own purposes. I swear I played this game like 7 times from beginning to end. Using the sword Fusion to steal enemies abilities to use against them was fun. Gaining the scrolls and fighting bosses was fun. Did I mention their was a functioning passage of time and Musashi even had to sleep to keep performing at peak levels? Oh, and if you haven't caught on to some the of puns in the names, this game had a lot of comic relief.
Sorry for the wall of text.
So, Escapists, what are some of your favorite old-school games?
Edit: I added the Sega Master System to the list of old school game systems. It's all thanks to VuvuZelaMan. The pompous elitist jerk. Thinks he's so much better than me because he named a system that was released when I was two.
I'm just joking with him. I actually appreciated the information. I was hoping that I didn't miss any. Though I did say that I might have missed a few in the initial post.
