Some artists, Radiohead for example, have in the last few years allowed fans to choose the price they pay for a particular album/single, even nothing.

Recently, Amanda Palmer(a musician) followed suit.
Now I have bought hard copies of every album she has released to date and will also buy her latest one when it comes out. I have also gone to see her live on a number of occasions.
This said, I opted to pay nothing for this single and even though I will buy the album I feel a bit cheap.

So, what about you Escapists? Would you download an album for free(legally) given the option? Or would you voluntarily pay what it is worth?

Hell I'd download it multiple times just because it's free, I'd then run down the streets screaming as much and tell a orphan child to go buy a giant turkey.

I probably would, although I might feel guilty about it.

Edit: Post number 444, by the way. I don't think this has any significance, but y'know.

When Radiohead released In Rainbows in that fashion I payed for it. I liked them enough to do so.

I'll always buy my music. If I had the opportunity, I'd like to give a more to the artists I really like.

Angels & Airwaves also released a free version of their album LOVE, or you had the option to buy it and the money would be donated to charity. I downloaded the free version because charity's get money for doing nothing and that makes me sick! maybe I should open a charity called " Give me all your moneys cuz i need it lolz"... I don't know where I was going with this and I probably sound like a bad person but yeah.... get if for free if you can...

If I think the music is good enough to be worth my money, then I will pay for it. Not a vast amount, maybe only £5/album, but enough to support the band in a small way.

Eh, don't really listen to either. I typically purchase by song. $1 seems a fair price per song for me, though I'm just as likely to listen to it on Youtube.

Depends who it is, really.

If it's a lesser known artist, then yeah sure thin I'll pay more than what's expected.
But if a big band is offering a free single? I'll have that for free then. Cheers.

A couple of weeks ago I downloaded the free EP 'All Squares and Circles' by 'Yearbook', an unsigned band...and I felt really guilty! Would've happily paid for it, even though there's only 1 song I genuinely like.

But yeah, depends on who the offer is from:]

I prefer when you can pay a minute sum for each song. That way I get what I want and they get paid for it.

Thank you! Someone else on this site made it for me, I'm fairly sure it was only because it was Doctor Who related though.

I believe the least it will let you pay is one penny though it is pretty much the same thing as free. The sad thing is that whenever radiohead does this people still pirate their shit.
