Before I would give my dudes the names Chris, Lance (mostly if they could wield longarms) or Gwiz0, which stood for "Gaming Wizard 0", but now every name is GammaChris. That comes from a time my friend Patrick was playing some online FPS (probably Halo). He was on a killing spree, so we called him AlphaPat. We liked it and things just took off from there.

Depends on the game genre, but usually a name from history that reflects (at least tangentially) some aspect of the character or what they do. Or just sounds amusing. Like calling a fire user Dante.

Usually just my own name or some variation on a band name I like i.e. Floydus was inspired by Pink Floyd

Though the name I'm the most proud of will always be my Diablo 2 barbarian named Barbarpappa, after a cartoon figure called Barbapappa
Åh herregud... Yeah, I, uh... hahaha... That is funny indeed. For us, most of all, I guess, being Swedish. Still got that one left? I still play D2 now and then.

On topic, I like this thread. This is a major issue when RP'ing, because a name can make you remember a lot of things, and can conjure motivation in many ways. It also says a lot of the character. I tend to go for the beautiful approach, as I always do in life. Things I like in other languages, like Latin and Japanese. Exempli gratia, Shichiyou is "moon", in Japanese. Always loved the moon. It fills me with a magical sense. So as I think of the character, I smile in remembrance of the mood of him/her. Or Darth Eternum (eternity is "aeternum" in Latin) for my Sith character.

Then we have names I just steal because I associate them with characters I love, like <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.82757#1136699>Lethe and <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.82014#1107669>Ilyana from Fire Emblem.
Moving on, we also have <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.88129#1347952>Mira Savo. A name I felt sounded French, which I got from the KotOR name generator, and used for a character I like to RP. I have also used simply Higurashi, but added "<url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.72627?page=7#1066221>Stargazer" as a surname of sorts.
Further, we have Nanase, whose name I got from El Goonish Shive, an awesome comic. I love the character deeply. Got the sheet for that specific character somewhere deep in my vast, vast inbox. She is in the same RP as Ilyana, anyway.

Right, those are some of my RP characters I have come up with. The only MMO I really played was Runescape back in the olden days, and my account was my name backwards. Not so fancy. Later on, I made one of the name "Wyrmqueen". Very likeable.

Oh, almost forgot. Got one named <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.68543?page=2#682382>Ashlen too, who I should mention for the sheer epicness of it. Anyone who likes to read should read the Ratings War thread. Ratings War II is going on right now as well. Pure epic.

Okay, I am really going to stop now. I have a lot more characters, but I figure this will not be read anyway. Abayo.
Well, no, I don't have the barbarian left, I think my sis stole him. I dumped him for a necromancer anyway - who was, on topic, named Eclipse, 'cause whenver I play non-online games where you must have an original name (i.e. only you can have that name on the server) I tend to turn on my cba face and name the character the first name I can think of, which will usually be something very very very overused and cheezy.

Such as my beforementioned necromancer Eclipse and my Oblivion dunmer Enigma.

Still, my sister has to take the price in odd names, since she has a druid named Paladin (in D2)

Also, on a side note; whenever playing any Zelda game, I prefer naming Link "someone" or "noone" since it screws up the conversations so epically.

I tend to nerd it up i'm afraid, and use the names of character I have in RPG's... Like Daciana Varzaru (it's romanian).

Often times I just click the "random" button until I get a name that looks easy enough to remember and isn't too silly. If the game doesn't have such a button, I string together letters until I have a name that seems pronouncable. Very rarely I have picked a name based on some interpretation of the character class. For example, my Witch Hunter in WAR is named Domenico, named for Domenico Angelo Tremamanado, an Italian fencing master who is often credited with creating the sport fencing.

Darn. Yeah, when it comes to D2, I have some cheesy ones. Though I really like my Dalsoon-nim, lightning sorc lvl.. 87? It's the Korean goddess of the moon. Then we have Maven, my Hammerdin, lvl 89, and my first one, Higurashi, a shocker. Then there's Osmond_Saddler, a barbarian named after the antagonist in Resident Evil 4. Fun fun. ^__^

Oh yes, I always used to name Link "I say". Cracks me up every time. Then I noticed Yahtzee did the same. x)

Sometimes, cheesy is the only way to go. Like my <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.88139?page=2#1347017>(Senerus) Arcgale with his sword Elipse. Cheesy suits his character perfectly. =)

I usually call my characters Taco, Kate, or S.T.N. Or DeathTrousers...

I steal names from everywhere. Some of my Pokemon names are:

Wiggles (Futurama, Bender called Fry 'Wiggles')
Imperator (Latin for emperor)
Carver (Jack Carver from Farcry)
Arachnid!!! (3 million cookies if you get the reference)
Banksy

You get the picture.

I don't use my real name (seriously, would you play a character in any game called Mads? )
But I am lazy, and usually go with Durandir. Which is elvish for Shadow Pilgrim.
Sometimes I use names from other games as well. Like Garrett if I play a thief.

Depends on the game I am playing. If it's an MMO type I just mash my face around the keyboard until it makes sense.

If it's a single RPG I like to either use some badly spelled mexican food dish, like Enchi Lada, or Kesa Deeya.

But when I played and my daddy left me to wander the world alone, I knew that I HAD to be a boy named Sue because I love Johnny Cash

I'm terrible, I agonize over what to name characters far more than I should, whether in games, or writing, or screen names.

fear of commitment + pressure to pick the perfect name = in need of therapy!

I think there's something about the Diablo-games that forces you to give the characters cheesy names, to be fair. I don't think I've had a single Diablo character that didn't have a worthless name. I always named my chars ShadowHunter in the first game (it crashed and had to be reinstalled, so there were many ShadowHunters... many many many...), because of total lack of imagination.

Anyone remember the name tags in SSBM, that you could use in multiplayer if you had problems keeping track on where you were on the screen? My friends called themselves YOU and ME.

"Hit ME!!!"
"Hey, stop hitting YOU!"

Gods... that was retarded... But still fun. So much fun *grin*

Whatever pops into my head. I had a high elf in oblivion called Milton Keynes and I chose all the useless things to specialise in (hand to hand, mercantile, speechcraft, armorer, alchemy, security and illusion) becuase I felt it the name suited it.

EDIT: I don't know how many people have heard of milton keynes but it's fairly renowned for being the most pointless place on earth.

I have a few actual names that I just choose from and sometimes I just pick a random object that has a nice ring to it.

Haha, nice one! :D

I usually name my characters after Japanese words (this way I learn words I have trouble with super fast) or character names from Dune. But if I'm forced to pick a ridiculously buff guy I name him 'Fluffy', 'Barbie' or the like.
