I have a regular practice when given the option to name my character in a game: Males will be named after Kurt Vonnegut (Mass Effect's TRUE hero: Commander Kurt Von Shepard).
Why not name him Kilgore T. Shephard instead?

Naming is simple for me.

I just pick a name from the real life nationality the character's in game nationality is based on.

For example, in Oblivion:

Imperial: Latin
Breton: French
Redguard: Arabic/African
Nord: Scandinavian/Danish

In Dragon Age:

Dwarven: Same as Nord
Human: Scottish
Elven: Who gives a crap? Elves are pussies in that game.

When I used to take games semi seriously, I would usually name them after some character in a movie or book, or make something up that sounded semi-Japanese- but not too much so that they sounded like a Final Fantasy character. But now I just name them all "Fart Sparkle".

I name it after me if I am going for a character who I want to be like me, Name it Tyler Durden if I make a character who I want to be like.
Nice avatar, buddy.

OT: I'm writing (read: writing a sentence a month) about a generic space marine following the lead space hero into battle, and I named the character Syphone Kage. I name all of my male leads that. I'll name the female lead Kara Kage. All anthropomorphic leads Pookie McGirlieMan

Male names: Hector, Francisco, or Diego. (I like spanish names for some reason) except in the case of my Argonian on Oblivion, his name is Rhaz-ul.

Female names: Rosslyn is the only female name I've ever used, I've just always liked that name.

I just pick what I think sounds cool. :p

For any regular games, I choose "Bubs" as my name, being the nickname my family has given me, based on the character from Homestar Runner.

For any games where my name will appear in text I tend to choose, "SH*T!!!" Always entertaining to congratulated as dramatic fecal matter.

In sim games (like Animal Crossing) I name them after myself.
I shamefully admit, though, to naming characters after characters from a fandom, otherwise. Kylar, Bill, Kikyo, Esmeralda...
Currently I'm tending to name male characters Doctor and female characters Romana.

Saint in a realistic seting and Lacker in a fantasy setting by default, although I like to shake things up a bit sometimes.

If it's a girl it'll either be a variation on the above (Lackette, Saintita) or off the top of my head.

I name my characters after characters from my stories, usually trying to match up the character name to how I've made them look and how they will act. It's kinda my way of reminding myself whether I'm being nice, nasty, or neutral.

Usually I'll just use my nickname Moo for the names i give my characters. I'd always name my nemesis on Pokemon Gold BUMFACE, purely because of the fact I thought it was a hilarious way to use up all 7 characters xD.
