nope. even a teleporter can't move things faster than the speed of light. the idea is that it breaks down matter into particles in order to move it to a set place as fast as possible. same way a tv obtains (or used to obtain i'm not sure how it works now) information.
Er...maybe not.

The definition of "teleporter" varies, sometimes it's fairly specific, and you can say more or less how it would work. Other times it's as vague as "you were here, and now you're over there and like totally almost not time has past and the stuff in the way doesn't matter, cause"...could be many ways of achieving the latter.

EDIT: After I posted this, it redirected me to one of those "Your computer is at risk of lots of infections" scams.

Tractor beams in 2011? Hmm, next thing you know, Mattel creates hoverboards in 2015.
All I know is that they better have those damned self lacing Nike sneakers or I will seriously be pissed off.

So, NASA cancelled the Space Program but are now pouring money into tractor beam research?
Most illogical...

And there was me thinking NASA couldn't possibly get any more stupid ideas.

I stand corrected.

Let me know if you ever manage to get that working, i'll be over here mocking you.

The [NASA] space agency has opened itself up to an eternity of Star Trek references.
I though Nasa open it self up to Star Trek References when they named the original prototype space shuttle the Enterprise.

The Craft is also referenced on Star Trek the Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise.

I can see it now!

*100 years in the future*

Pilot: Sir, unknown ship detected!

Admiral: Activate the Optical Vortex...bring it aboard.

*Present day*

Please, Please, PLEASE be called Optical Vortex...it sounds so bad ass! Even if our ships are pretty much huge tin cans with bits falling off them, at least we can say we have that! xD

Nasa: Were leaving space.
Everyone: AHHAA..
Nasa: But were going to be making sci-fi reality.
everyone: YAAY!

Well, I'm glad NASA is still doing something since they've been grounded, anyway.
