That's just sad...
Instead of losing two dogs they lost both their lives and left their baby without parents...

My condolences to all of them.

True, I can't think of an alternative scenario, or at least a likely one.
Hmmm... How about this: The dogs were on leashes and pulled one spouse in. The second spouse jumped in to save the second.
Thats possible, certainly. Hadn't thought of that.

I thought natural selection was to place the baby in front of the fire, if he sticks his hand in the pretty warm light he gets hurt and never does it again, if he does it again after getting hurt... well... out back

No, natural selection is the name that we use to describe the fact that only organisms who are adapted to their environment survive long enough to reproduce. Using your example -- if a kid keeps sticking his hand in the fire no matter how much he gets burned, he will lose both his hands (and maybe more) before long, which will make him incapable of performing most tasks as well as visually unattractive to opposite sex. As a result, he most probably will not find a mate to have a baby with, effectively making the line of people with fire-happy genes extinct as soon as he himself dies.

They were stupid to jump into the river, but if you had a pet you'd understand their actions. I have a dog and I'd possibly do the same thing, although I'm aware jumping into a river is a stupid thing to do. There's no need to take the piss out of them, and you should all be ashamed of yourselves. Douches.

They obviously didn't go in thinking they were going to drown.

I pity the kid, and just have to wonder why both went into the water?

No no thats survival of the fit-enough, I dont know where the survival of the fittest came from if you can reproduce successfully you are fit enough, and uh, natural selection is like a side order thing

From wikipedia:
Natural selection is the process where heritable traits that make it more likely for an organism to survive long enough to reproduce become more common over successive generations of a population. It is a key mechanism of evolution.
[..]
Darwin first used Spencer's phrase "survival of the fittest" as a synonym for "natural selection" in the fifth edition of On the Origin of Species, published in 1869. It is a metaphor, not a scientific description, and is both incomplete and misleading.
