I believe this information was pretty common back when halo 2 first came out, I mean, it couldn't have just been bad luck that every single match ever had some racist little 9 year old trying to break my eardrums with his god-forsaken little prepubescent voice box

A sad truth. My brother plays Club Penguin and has milked even more money out of my supposedly poor family so he can buy pretty much all the merchandise and in-game items for it, it sickens me.

When i was his age i was grateful to have 1 month of Runescape subscription once a year and at least that game had some worth.

If I remember right (correct me if I'm wrong) but this is exactly what happened to DnD (it was once socially acceptable and normal but now it's seen as the past-time of people with no social skills and an overactive imagination), the 'hardcore' fans started viewing it as 'their thing' which in turn slowly drove people out and gave them the negetive stereotype they have today.
Actually, DnD is more acceptable today than it ever was, with parents who grew up with DnD's inception teaching their kids how to play. Plus, you just have to look at the uptick of DnD articles on this website, and the exposure DnD gets on Penny Arcade, and it's little wonder that more and more people are deciding that DnD is worth trying out. The stereotype of DnD being for people with no social skills is stupid anyway, seeing as you need a large group of friends, preferably in the same room, to successfully piece together a good campaign.

Back to the article, I'm not surprised at the number of kids playing games online. Even I used to play on Neopets back when I was younger and the surveys were easy to spoof info for. My parents told me we paid a $1 an hour for our dialup internet, and I had to share my computer with my sister, so my internet use had to be sparse, not to mention the fact that the phone line would tie up the connection. Now, almost every kid has some sort of high-speed broadband connection and a lot of parents are paranoid about their kids going outside. It seems like a natural progression to get kids addicted to online games.

Whats a tween? it sounds like a wierd bird or some horrible disease.
if i'm not mistaken, its a hobbit between the ages of 20 and 32.
That would be "adult".
No, it wouldn't. A hobbit's coming of age is at 33. Just the Tolkien nerd in me.

On topic, who else is a bit disturbed by all those children playing CoD? I mean, it comes as no surprise, but I still feel like kids shouldn't play those games.

Amen. So would I.

On topic though, when I was 'round 8 - 11, I used to play Starsiege & Tribes, the two games in one package.

As we all know, Tribes and Starsiege are still alive and are 99% populated by really mature and tech-savvy people. I got to know most of the people and I can say, they tolerated me and I matured alot faster during that period of time.

But nowadays, all the kids care is about CoD and shouting 'fag' every two seconds. I am glad I still experienced a golden age of PC gaming back in the days. These children should be monitored and -forced- to play games that are below their rating, not above. They cannot handle it and only brings 'evil' to the gaming community. Of course I am stereotyping but I only met one or two souls that were actually fun to play with, and they were both 12.
If you get rid of the two 12 year olds being the only fun people to play with and replace that with mature (see, nicer) over 18 year olds and you're spot on. I used to be like the annoying kids in games, but luckily I met a clan of people who helped me grow out of it.

My younger brother's friend refers to himself as a tween.

Prediction:

If "Nearly all" kids nowadays play games, then once they grow up and have kids of their own, games will be far more socially acceptable than they are now.

Could be nice.

The term "tween" makes me want to vomit. That's really all I have to contribute to this topic as the rest of it is completely not surprising.

Now if we could just convince parents that its up to them to educate their children on all the problems in the world like sexism, racism, and why you can blow shoot people in the head, and then hit ctrl over and over again over their corpse.

Nope, I refuse to recognize "tween" as an actual age group.

Seriously, it just sounds like an excuse for children to act older (not more mature) than they actually are. Doesn't sound any different from "Pre-teen" which was popular a while back.

I dunno why this pisses me off, but it does.

Ugh, Tween makes me cringe.
I just called my self a pre-teen at the time.

One of my mum's friends called me a Tweener once.
I blacked out and woke up to find my hands covered in blood. D:

EDIT: OT: Not just games like Club Penguin. I personally think way too many pre-teens play games like MW2 and Halo.
They've developed the nickname Screechers for a reason.

Granted I played a few M-games at that age, I just didn't use voice-chat.

Only 5000? I doubt this is an acurrate representation, plus it doesn't say how they distributed the question/quiz.
Exactly! I went and checked their website but they do not show their methodology. How were these surveyed? By phone? Was the survey population self selecting (with a questionnaire on the internet)? If so, the results really are "most kids who use the internet play online games. As it stands, like so many things passed off as "studies" these days, the information here is useless. Plus, according to this (2005) study, only %76 of American adults own a computer.(http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=6094) Sure, kids can access from school, library, friends houses, etc. But I'm skeptical about this study.

When I was ten, I was playing Max Payne and Red Alert 2, not some extremely boring Penguin-themed chat room. I refuse to call that gaming. NEVER!

[HEADING=3][Elitist Mode Disengaged][/HEADING]

Whoa, sorry for that, I was just taken over by my inner elitism.

Honestly though, while I like the fact that gaming may soon be considered main-stream due to its growing popularity, I can't but think that soon the industry will be overtaken by publishers solely working to please the "main-stream audience" instead of the "hardcore" crowd. Games like Farmville and Peggle may become the new CoD or Half-Life of the future.

If i hear "tween"(that includes seeing it) someone is going to die horribly. Now how is this news? Anyone whose played an FPS online knows that screechy, high pitched "voice" of that kid claiming how high/drunk he is. Parents not using parental controls? OH LAWDY! INFORM FAUX NEWZ! Also when they did that survey was that a "pick nay game you like" or pick form the 2 games on the list?

Also, i refuse to view penguin crap as a "game" its a chatroom with visual/audio upgrades nothing more.

Edit: i saw "tween" on MSN news i saw a flash of searing white light passed out and woke up to a broken desk chair, smashed TV, and a freaked out gold fish.

Because its a fake word made up by little girls who want to sound older but know if they call themselves as a teenager some animal higher up on the "popularity foodchain" will eat them
