As of late I've had a craving to play a necromancer, but the games I've played where necromancy is done semi-right are very few - Guild Wars (1, not 2) and Diablo 2... I really can't think of any more games. In both games you actually feel like a master of undead hordes and that's awesome, but both games have a lack of undead variety (in terms of looks as well as usefulness, I don't count the golems in Diablo 2, because they aren't truly undead) - Diablo has skeletons ...and more skeletons, while Guild Wars 1 has the same model for every undead creature you can summon (some more bony than others, but still the same). Neverwinter Nights has the Pale Master, but his minions aren't numerous nor useful and you have to severely gimp yourself to summon a semi-decent minion.

Sooo my questions are these - What do you consider a necromancer done right? Can you recommend me a game with necromancy done right (preferably an RPG)?

It's only in early access right on Steam now, but Nekro might be to your liking. It's a little silly, but you play as the titular necromancer, and you get to upgrade various things, such as your powers and your summons.

Path of Exile has plenty of Necromancy-type summons, such as:

Zombies (all-around attacker)
Skeletons (slower, temporary Zombies that don't require a corpse)
Spectres (raise an enemy with all of its original abilities & stats[footnote]For extra laughs, raise an enemy that is itself capable of summoning Minions as a Spectre! Minionception![/footnote])
Raging Spirits (short-lived Burning Skulls, though granted these are only barely "summons")

Mind you, it's not the friendliest or most intuitive of games, but you should at least give it a try.

Well if your wanting the hordes of minions that grows as you kill things to control and send after your enemies game-play and don't mind if they aren't an actual Necro there is Overlord (uses goblin things).
But yeah the only game I can think of off the top of my head which actually had a proper undead raising necromancer was what you already said : Gw1. You also had Ritualists in GW1 which you could build around summoned bound spirits so basically necromancy. You could muticlass with a necro as well and have both spirits and undead! To a lesser extent in Gw2 but you don't actually use corpses, you only get 6 or so and the minions are currently broken (again) anyway. There are plenty of games that have a summon undead spell but few where you can build around it.

The and all and be all of Necromancers was Everquest's class.

Had limited utility in group back in the day, but is king of soloing and can do content solo that would take a whole group to do.

Age of Conan has a necromancer class as well. I haven't the faintest how the game's classes are balanced in general but remember the necromancer was pretty good for damage output and staying alive. Lots of minions to summon, dark arts upon which to call to slay your enemies, etc.

Skyrim isn't bad for necromancy though the options are limited. A novice necromancer (conjuration tree) can reanimate a corpse up to a given level for a short time. As the conjuration skill improves, so too does the power of the reanimated corpses which last longer and can be of a higher level. The master conjurer can have two perma-undead raised from corpse of practically any humanoid in the game, with bonus health (they retain spells and fighting skills from their living form). Vampirism and Vampire Lord (DG) synergise very well with the necromancy playstyle.

In addition, there is the ritual stone [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJeSmTwnNAo] to raise multiple slain foes once per day (and an "exploit" that enables preposterous sized armies of undead minions). Add to this various other things to be summoned, such as liches, Bone Men, Duur'Neviir (an undead Dragon from the Soul Cairn, if you have Dawnguard) and the other magic schools (illusion, alteration, restoration, destruction), there's a lot of fun to be had. (One side benefit of high conjuration skill is that conjured "Bound" weapons are very powerful). Be sure to pick up the Necromage perk for bonus effects to all your undead minions (and yourself if you play a vampire).

If you play it on PC, there are also some cool mods [http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/searchresults/?src_order=1&src_sort=0&src_view=1&src_tab=1&src_name=necromancy&src_language=0&src_showadult=1&ignoreCF=0&page=1&pUp=1] to make your favourite of the arcane arts even deeper. It can be made more challenging, rewarding, interesting, new perks/spells, increased variety in what you can "bring back" (eg. mummies, infected zombies, wraiths/ghosts, etc).

If you wanted to give necromancy a try in Skyrim, you'll want to concentrate on Conjuration, Illusion and probably alchemy and enchanting too. You could use a (soul trap) weapon/spell if you want, or use a shield in one hand and spell in the other but really would be better off keeping your minions alive and buffed with illusion spells and your enemies debuffed with negative illusion spells. You can raise archers or melee fighters as you like, or other mages. You can even raise enemy necromancers who can then raise a thrall of their own! You'll want to find the Ritual Stone too for the extra death defying goodness. Restoration shouldn't be ignored for healing your minions and the Necromage perk. Consider going vampire too and roleplay the master of undeath. :)

About NWN, I'm with you on the Pale Master. While it had some interesting benefits, I think the cost of them was too high. You could try a Warlock from NWN2. You'll never had numerous minions but (and it's a good but) Warlocks can cast their Invocations unlimited times per day and one of the lesser ones is a summon undead that grows in power (up to about level 18 IIRC). The Hellfire Warlock gets Summon Baatezu once per day too and one of the top invocations is an unlimited Shapeshift ability to change into a Devil with a flaming sword. It's seriously awesome.

Skyrim with mods. Base game, ya getting two undead max is kind of lame (although depending on who you get, they can be pretty powerful -Eg, teleporting mage from the one Daedric quest). However, mods can let you have as many as you want, make the level cap for summoning undead much higher, and also give a large amount of summons. I made an evil necromancer character who has no combat skills besides conjuration. I go from city to city with an army of undead and slaughter everyone.

Edit: And it seems that well I was typing this, someone ninja'd me.

Thank you all for your suggestions, but they only confirm that there are very very few games that can let you play a decent necromancer (I don't count RTS or TBS games because it's not what I'm looking for atm, but I've played Warcraft 3 and I'll probably try Warlock 2). Let's hope for a brighter necromantic future :D

You could presumably build a Necromancer wizard in Dungeons & Dragons, or whichever Prestige that specializes in that.

Heroes of Might and Magic series - One of the races is the Necropolis, complete with unique hero abilities to raise enemy armies as Skeletal hordes.

Baldur's Gate 2, Icewid Dale, D&D games in general - Some of the older games have the Necromancers as a Mage subtype, Mages in general can be built around a Necromancer theme. Clerics as well, to a degree.

Dwarf Fortress has great necromancy, although attaining it without already being a night creature is quite a challenge. The best thing about it is that bandit/goblin ambushes will scale with the size of your undead army (did I mention you can resurrect just about anything? Fingers, tongues, it's all fair game) so you can end up having a massive 200v400 battle that'll tear your FPS to shreds.

Oh God yes, HoMM was also great with this. Nothing beats raising hundreds of skeletons after each battle.

Master of Magic. It's old 4X game that is first Civilization on steroids and magic but so damn awesome. Once you go with death magic necromancy can go a long way!
