I'm cheap, gonna go ahead and get that out there. I'm also looking for a new game, something FPS-y or RPG. Free is ideal but I don't mind shelling out a few bucks for something.

Games I've enjoyed, for reference:
Painkiller (played original + resurrection, liked the first WAY more)
Half Life 2 + episode 2
Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
The Halo series
Saints Row 2
Morrowind (+expansions)
Oblivion (+expansions)
Dead Rising

So yeah if anyone has any suggestions let 'em fly.

Elder Scrolls Daggerfall for RPG.
The Marathon series for FPS.
Hope that helps.

1. Go back in time.
2. Get a PSN account.
3. Wait to get hacked.
4. Download inFamous and Little Big Planet

I all seriousness jump onto gog.com and see whats on offer. You can pick up a variety of old games for heaps cheap. The other option is to check out Steam and see what deals they have this week.

League of Legends is free to play, its a DoTA style 5v5 pvp rts type game. (if you're european, make sure you get the EU client!)

For cheap games... keep an eye on steam, it has special offers every day, and you can see which of your friends have it and ask them if its good. (Currently all the Red Faction games are 75% off, which arn't half bad!)

Most of these are computer games.
Go to steam and download Alien Swarm. Completely free. Top down shooter. Computer only.
If you haven't played Mass Effect, it's pretty good. 19.95 CAD on Steam.
There is a Fallout package on steam, very heavy RPG elements. The package is about 24.95 CAD, 10 a piece for the three games inside. Computer.
Portal of course, if you do not have it already.
Not a game, but a Half Life 2 Mod. Dear Esther, short but quite a spooky experience. Computer.

If you're HL2 edition is Steam, and not the XBox360 one, maybe search through MODDB (Site name) for some good Half Life 2 mods, there are quite a few, some are even full games like 1187: Episode One (FPS fan made prequel to Half Life 2, shortly after the Combine's invasion.)

Last thought, I'm downloading Lord of the Rings Online as I post this, heard it was a good game, and it is free for the first 50 or so levels in it. Mildly geeky middle earth MMO, if you have any interest in that.

Japanese Roguelike, most humourous of the list. Probably the best starting place if you're not used to roguelikes.

Nethack [http://www.nethack.org/]

Very complicated roguelike, spoilers are practically necessary to have any hope of beating the game. I've played for ages and come close to beating it about twice.

Dwarf Fortress [http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/]

God game to end all god games. You control a bunch of alcoholic retards and your job is to stop them all killing each other and/or themselves while keeping a bunch of fuckwit nobles making ridiculous demands happy. Good luck figuring out how to do this without watching a tutorial.

ADOM [http://www.adom.de/]

Another roguelike, very detailed and complex but doesn't have as many insane leaps of logic as Nethack.

Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup [http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/]

Yet another roguelike, if you aren't used to the games this is where I'd start.

Meritous [http://www.asceai.net/meritous/]

Shoot 'em up game.

All free, all awesome.

On the MMO side since I haven't seen any of those on this list...

Champions Online FFO -- Super hero themed MMO from the makers of City of Heroes, and it recently went free

Spiral Knights -- Pretty fun casual dungeon crawling MMO

The Spirit Engine 2.

It's one of the best-designed RPGs I've played, period.

Also, if you have a gamecube, Metroid Prime is kind of an FPS (although it's really just a 3-D metroidvania) that you can get for like $5 used now.

get an emulator and some roms. I just got a super nintendo and chrono trigger today, probably the most hours of videogame fun i've ever had for absolutely free.
