Don't know too much about NVIDIA cards, but an ATI 4870 would be a good choice. Its what I'm looking into getting. When I get money.

This [http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-radeon-hd-6870-geforce-gtx-570,2834.html] might help a bit. It says you might be best off getting a Radeon 6870.

Wow, talk about living in the past. The 6000 series is out. The 4870 is a bit of a dog compared to current cards.

OP What PSU do you have, what OS do you have, and are you an Nvidia fanboy?

At the moment the best bang for your buck GPU is the 460GTX, but there are good cards either side of it from ATI.

GeForce GTX 470. Go get one. Ignore those Radeon fanboys.

You could also post some other info of your system, as there isn't too much sense getting a graphics card with CPU and RAM are holding you down.

If you aren't sure what components your system consists of, I'd recommend Speccy [http://www.piriform.com/speccy] for that. It's nifty with showing temperatures too.

Then you don't want to limit yourself to anything less than a Directx 11 card. The ATI/AMD 6870 needs a 500watt PSU and the 460GTX is about the same. As long as your PSU is a quality unit you should be fine. Both of these cards should be able to max out most games on a 1080 monitor. Of course pigs like Crysis and Metro 2033 are never happy no matter your GPU. Checkout some reviews, from memory the Nvidia runs a smidgin cooler.

Jeezus! 4gb minimum RAM these days, I hope you have a 64 bit version of Win 7 otherwise you're kind of screwed. That isn't the best chip either, at least it's a quad, but without the L3 cache of the Phenoms it is seriously nerfed.

That's got to be the ram on the graphics card.
Nvidia 470 or Radeon 6870, both are good cards.
One thing to check to see if you have the right power connectors from your PSU for the graphic cards.

if your looking for a semi cheap upgrade but still runs everything modern on high settings, go with the hd radeon 5770, its 130 dollars average now, and im sure it'll be on sales at some point if you watch for it. (i'm running crossfire with two of those and nothing hiccups, NOTHING!)

Don't buy a 4870. Get at least a 5770 if you go ATI, or a 460GTX if you wanna bake cookies inside your case.

I had an ATI 1300-1550xt and i replaced it with a NVIDIA Geforce 450 GTS. Cost $130 Australian, and was one of the best choices of my life!

yupp, (this one is at 110 right now, plus 8 bucks shipping)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121363R

there aren't any reviews on it, but i personally have it and have had it since last july, and the thing runs like a dream for the most part, and asus is a good company so if anything is wrong with yours i'm sure shit would get figured out.

so just figured i'd toss that out there, since i was checking out some stuff for myself on newegg.
