So, my fellow escapists, I once again call upon thy assistance!

I'm looking to get into doing gaming commentary/reviews on youtube (incredibly original, I know), however I have been thwarted in the planning stages already.

I can't for the life of me find a decent screen recording program. I've tried camstudio, fraps and bandicam (which was the best of the three). All three have provided end results that are less than satisfactory. The framerate was horrendous.

So, do any of you fine gentlemen and ladies know a solution to my predicament? It's okay if it requires payment (quality usually does). Also, if we're already at it, some tips & tricks for the newbie would be much appreciated!

What's your definition of "horrendous", and could it in part be because of your hardware? Video recording is rather resource-intensive, so if you can't already get a steady 60+ FPS in most games, it's going to tank while recording regardless of what you use.

Fraps is the only one I've used, but it's pretty reliable at 30 FPS for those games I could already handle while not recording.

Another thing to note is that Youtube videos will largely only ever be rendered at a maximum of 30 FPS anyway, so recording at a higher framerate will really only take up more space on your hard drive, unless you physically can't play games at 30 FPS.

Open Broadcast Software is free and does a great job. It's also updated frequently. It's better than XSplit IMO.

Keep in mind, it was DESIGNED for streaming, but you can record with it just fine; it just takes a little bit more setup than your other options.

Your framerate will take a hit when recording, unless you're doing a simple 2D game or some such. For example, I've been recording Rise of the Traid for my youtube channel, and it drops from like 90+ FPS to about 50 when recording, sometimes even lower.

By "horrendous", I meant bandicam dropping to the lower teens while fraps hit single digits. I've got a rather powerful little beastie so i'd expect something around 30. My expectations were never higher than that. By default I can run most games at above 60+, while the real heavy hitters (crysis 3 ultra, witcher 2 ultra) jump around 40-50.
