I've just installed some a new 2GB stick of ram, to add to my existing 3GB ram, thus making 5GB ;)
What i didn't realise when i ordered the ram, was that it was going to be a different speed to my existing ram, and thus now it's in, the timings are all out, making it unstable.

Talking to my friend, who advises me on all things technical, has helped me sort out the speeds, but by doing so has caused my cpu temperatures to rise, without any noticable performance changes.

My parents have got a spare 1GB stick of ram, that will be at the same speed as my current ram, thus making it more stable.
So my dilemma is:
1) Stick with current RAM and leave it slightly overclocked to make things run faster, but have my cpu temps rise
2) Stick with current RAM and not overclock it, causing it to be slightly unstable but have normal cpu temps
3) Put in parents RAM, reducing me from 5GB to 4GB, but with stable memory and normal cpu temps.

Advise me :D

Option 3.

Do you really need more than four gigs of ram?

Also, I assume that you are also using a 64 bit OS.

I'm swaying towards option 3.
I've been getting BSOD recently, and i think the unstable ram configuration may be the cause

hmm, true. I'd prefer it to be stable and keep my cpu temps normal. I just cant decide :/
Get better cooling pipes for your CPU if you would like to keep it over clocked, otherwise change out the ram. One quick question, what OS you using?

Wait, are you running a miss matched dual channel? You would get better performance out of a matched 2Gb pair than miss-matched 3Gb. I'd say buy a matched 4gb set of RAM and sell all your other sticks on eBay, if anyone will buy them. You are running a 64 bit OS aren't you?

Otherwise option 3.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit OS.
I'm probably just gonna go with 3, its probably my most stable option, and with uni coming up, the last thing i need is for my computer to keep crashing on me
