sim city 4 is now on steam and i recently got into tropico 3 and i was going to buy it but i have a quad core processor and SC4 is very unstable on multicore computers, so i was wanting to know of any other good city building games.

The first one I got into was Utopia on the Intellivision. It was like competitive citybuilding but very very primitive. My favorite in my teen years was Act Raiser for the SNES: action platforming with citybuilding in between. Unfortunately those are the two not-obvious ones I know of. Worth checking out if you can but I think I want to keep my eyes on this thread as I?m sure there?s been another even better one since then.

Run it on a single core...

(assuming you're using Windows7)
start the game
ctrl-alt-delete
task manager
processes
find your simcity (probably SC4.exe or something like that)
right-click on the process
set affinity
uncheck 3 cores, leave only CPU0 checked

And voila, you're running the game single-core, without problems, helps a lot with apps that don't like multicores...

If you like historical gaming, CivCity Rome is a really fun and well-designed city-building game, as is the classic Caesar III.

If not, then I'd suggest sticking to the classics, more specifically, to SimCity 2000.

I know but I think you can download Act Raiser if you have a Wii. Utopia was great in the 70s but is about as sophisticated as a cell phone game from 10 years ago.
I just wanted to keep track of your thread so I can check in and find one for myself.

You'd have to do it everytime, these settings don't "save", works fine though, and it takes about 10 seconds to do.

ok, i just googled it and you can set this through a desktop shortcut and that saves. i'm probably gonna get SC4.

also, is cities XL 2011 really being released in 2 days? it might be better since it's a different developer.

Huh, i didn't know that, it seems you can put a command line in the shortcut to force it single-core everytime, very useful... There you go then.

As far as city-builders goes , Simcity holds the crown, Tropico's not bad, CitiesXL is subpar imo.

Not what you asked for, but if you just like the experience of building in general I'd recommend the Civilization series. Civ V has a free demo on Steam, and Civ IV (actually quite a different game) is only $20.

NO. NEVER get cities XL. i beta'd it and it was horrible. it is now DEFUNCT. you can only play single player but cities XL IS A CITY BUILDER MMO WITH FEATURES MISSING IN SINGLEPLAYER.
I'm in the same situation of looking for a city-builder, and I'm still curious about the new Cities XL. The first one was definitely a horrible failure, but the new devs dropped the ridiculous multiplayer concept entirely and did some clean up. I might wait for a few reviews first.

Anno 1404 is good... Immortal Cities is very good. Caesar IV is a callback to the old Caesars, and is probably the best of the "Roman" city-builders. Grand Ages Rome is sort of a casual CB game (but it looks oh, so beautiful)... and Settlers 7 is also casual, but is afflicted with the abomination of UbiRM, so I wouldn't recommend it. Those are pretty much all the historical city builders of recent years; take your pick.
