I need/want some help finding an old book I had read over fifteen years ago (late 1990's). I can only remember a few details so I know this is a long shot at best, but I will appreciate any help given.
The book was about a cannibal loose in a major city (I want to say Chicago or New York) and a cop/private detective searching for him.
The cannibal was originally a U.S. soldier in the Vietnam war, who was trapped underground with Vietcong soldiers. They all turned to cannibalism to survive and started killing each other off. The U.S. soldier would sneak into the Vietcong 'camp' when the went to sleep to scavenge off the corpse the others were feeding from.
And when the cannibal made it back to America he took to hiding in a sewer or under/in an abandoned zoo.
