Well, about half a year ago I bought a 360 Pro as it was fairly cheap (200 Euros, for comparison a Wii is 250 and a PS3 400) and after some initial excitement the thing quickly fell into disuse. That's probably in large part due to the games I bought for it but I couldn't find anything that looked more interesting at a price I was willing to pay (depends on how interesting a game is, generally a box where the only non-browngray color is the green plastic kills my interest since I think of it as a generic clone with ancestors that can probably be had for way cheaper and with less suck).

The stuff I got already (some bought because it was really cheap and I figured I could accept a disappointment at that price):

WarTech: Senko No Ronde (15€) (meh)
The Outfit (13€ used) (meh)
Earth Defense Force 2017 (~25€) (great)
Eternal Sonata (~20€) (meh)
Saints Row (10€) (great)
Phantasy Star Universe (7€) (meh)
Halo 3 (30€) (it's... well, an FPS except with clunky controls, feels about 10-15€ too expensive)

XBLA:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (10€) (didn't really click with me)
Braid (15€) (nice)
Castle Crashers (15€) (nice)
The Maw (10€) (nice)

Total is 170€, compared to the 200€ the hardware itself cost. I'm not going to pay for XBL Gold unless I've got a significant pool of games I'd actually want to play online and even then it's questionable since my online play behaviour is roughly "play twice, forget about".

I've got a gaming-capable PC and will buy games for the PC if they're cross-platform (unless the PC port is so seriously botched that it's crap, then I won't buy either because each option is inferior to the other in some way) because they're 20€ more expensive on the console. I also have a Wii that has about 20 retail and 40 downloaded games and a DS with more games than fit on my shelf. Judging by my library on other systems I'd say my favourite genre is the 2D Jump & Run but that probably has no relevance when talking about modern home consoles. I absolutely hate stealth sequences, the only cases where I could tolerate them enough were the temple in Phantom Hourglass and the sentry turrets in Portal.

I live in Germany, as far as I can tell Gears of War, Condemned, Crackdown and Dead Rising were not released here. I was already advised not to buy the system when I couldn't find more than 2-3 games I was interested in on the GameRankings top 100 or so list (back before GR got redesigned to be shit and I completely stopped using it) but well, I didn't listen, figured there'd be at least something considering how often a game got announced as being only for the PS360 and not the PC or Wii. Well, this is how I ended up. I wouldn't say the games on it were a waste of money but the system itself didn't exactly do enough to be worth it. It isn't exactly new on the market yet the bargain bins are almost empty.

This came out as quite a wall of text so I guess I can't blame people if they don't read it...

EDIT: PS, is there a way to receive notifications when the thread gets replies?

XBLA: Buy Rez HD. Old school rail shooter, but probably the best old school rail shooter you will ever play. Especially good if you like Trance. Was originally released on the Dreamcast, has been ported to the PS2 and since graphically/audibly updated for the 360. Google it, take a look.

As for the rest, use Metacritic's review list to spot.

Maybe I should have mentioned that I already have Rez on the PS2 (was one of the first games I got for the system actually) and Fallout 3 on the PC...

Still worth the update for Rez, in my opinion, espescially if you have a decent soundsystem. No word on a new trance vibrator addon though \o/

Wait, Gears of War, Condemned, Crackdown and Dead Rising not released in Germany? I live north from you and we got those games. I don't see a reason why you wouldn't get them. If you can get them for cheap, Ninja Gaiden II (and possibly Ninja Blade if you can get it for extra cheap, it isn't that bad). Lost Odyssey if you like JRPGs. Fable 2. Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts (and the original on XBLA if you haven't played it).

Ikaruga, Geometry Wars 2, Kingdom of Keflings and Outrun Arcade are all nice games on XBLA. Ikaruga is a port but it's Treasure's best game so if you haven't owned it before, now's the time.

You don't need a trance vibrator. Just get an extra bunch of controllers and stick them... well, wherever you're going to stick them.

MS doesn't allow releasing games that got rejected by the USK (all console manufacturers have that rule so we didn't get MadWorld and almost had no God of War either though I have no idea what Sony did to get a rating on that game), kinda like they don't allow AO rated games in the US. I don't think any of these games got banned though (unlike Manhunt).

If you can get them for cheap, Ninja Gaiden II (and possibly Ninja Blade if you can get it for extra cheap, it isn't that bad).
Hm, I've played the NB demo and found it alright though it felt more like playing a rhythm game than a 3d melee action game most of the time (and of course with the reports about 4 hours of play time I'll really wait for a very low price, considering how new it is I don't think that'll happen anytime soon though). Ninja Gaiden I'm not so sure about, complaints about the camera make the whole thing sound like I'd toss it aside faster than Devil May Cry 3 (difficulty and a bad camera should never, EVER be combined).

Lost Odyssey if you like JRPGs. Fable 2. Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts (and the original on XBLA if you haven't played it).
Hm, isn't Fable 1 pretty much everything that matters about Fable 2 except vastly cheaper? The Banjo-Kazooie NB demo didn't exactly portray the game in a positive light (then again almost all the demos I've played felt like garbage) though I heard it's not very representative of the final game, the original may also be worth a look. Does it have modernized camera controls? The limited camera is my biggest gripe with any N64 games I've played so far, including Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Super Mario 64.

Ikaruga, Geometry Wars 2, Kingdom of Keflings and Outrun Arcade are all nice games on XBLA. Ikaruga is a port but it's Treasure's best game so if you haven't owned it before, now's the time.
Yeah, I've already got Ikaruga on the Gamecube, not really my kind of game though. GW2 didn't really convince me on its mechanics in the demo either (I played the DS version of Galaxies for a while but GW2 didn't feel as interesting) and the demo for Keflings was just insulting considering the constant "you got an archievement, buy the game!" popups and the whole thing ending after the freaking tutorial. Racing isn't really my thing so I think I'll pass on Outrun.

Well, I went with Kingdom for Keflings for now since that was the easiest to reach and am now considering Virtual On. I didn't like Rez on the PS2 so I don't want/need an updated version of it.

An assessment of RE5 I've read was that it's weaker than RE4 but the writer preferred it since it brings conclusion to the RE story threads. I've never played any RE other than 4 though so I'd have no idea where those threads came from (I was already confused when the army dude with the knife showed up in RE4 and Leon knew him and talked about organizational business or something). That stupid AI ally deal doesn't sound very good either.

Anyway, so far the list of suggestions with the stuff I've already ruled out filtered seems to look like this:
Saints Row 2 (did the PC port of that get fixed, BTW?) (I already have the first and that only cost a tenner, 70€ for the second seems a lot in comparison...)
Ninja Blade if dirt cheap (not gonna happen anytime soon)
Lost Odyssey (hm, I'm not sure if I can still tolerate JRPGs)
Banjo-Kazooie N&B (Demo was bad but people say the game's better...)
Banjo-Kazooie N64 (15€ is a bit much for an N64 game, reviews say it didn't hold up well either)
Fable 2 (Is it worth the price difference over Fable 1?)
Resident Evil 5 (With a plot I don't care about and an ally I'll probably hate is that a good idea?)

I'm really trying hard to overcome my "browngray = generic garbage" filter already. It doesn't help that even games that aren't browngray tend to have browngray boxes.

Oblivion gave me 25000+ hours of fun.

Nut and Bolts gave me 35 hours of pure ecstasy.

Saint's Row 2 gave me 180 (and growing) hours of hilarity.

what bout cod 4

good game and u'll have fun for hours

cod world at war is good aswell, it boasted a very cool nazi zombies.

so if i were you, get them too unless u wanna wait for cod 6 11/10/2009

if you like free roam driving games with loads of roaming space, get test drive unlimited

if you like racing games with lots of races and pretty good graphics with an option to tune your car and make it your own - need for speed undercover.

tom clancey vegas 2 was a game that i loved but less and less people started to play it so if you dont care about online, get it, if you do, then my opinion is dont bother.

fallout 3 and oblivion are great games. the only differences is obviously fallout 3 is retro future and it has guns. oblivion has swords and has the same person doing the same voices for every single bloudy person! "HAIL CITIZEN!"

left 4 dead is a game i love and if you love horror survivals with plenty of suprises gun fights and a 2p mode. you'll love it, the online is great too! but if you have a PC get left 4 dead on pc, i recently went to my friends house and it has these cool new maps and a survival mode which is very awesome!

those are a few of my fav games which i would seriously consider checking out dude and plus most of them are old now so you could pick em up cheaply. test drive unlimited in britain right now is going for £10!! which is a great price and they are all the same with the exeption of the call of duty's and maybe left 4 dead and fallout 3!

happy game hunting!

I don't think I'd like Ninja Gaiden at all, I find melee in games hard enough when the game is easy and the things I hear about NG's difficulty make me think I'd get to the first enemy or so and not one bit further.

I noticed quite a few suggestions are crossplatform games, as I said I'd get those on the PC (cheaper game, free online, better controls). BTW, I hate racing games.

Why has nobody suggested Mass Effect yet? Urgh.

There IS a PC version, but apparently its really buggy.
