I'm having trouble going to sleep atm, so how do you guys do it? Particularly when you can't sleep because something's on your mind?

Win.

But seriously. If you have things on your mind that are keeping you from sleeping, why not try to resolve it? Or take tranquilizer? I dunno.

I hear turkey and milk helps.

Get the fuck off the internet, turn off your computer, lie down in bed, and shut your eyes?

Stay awake until I am tired enough. I have time, too much time...
Or reading, that's always very helpful.

Not trying to sleep until I feel tired. Then, once I am tired, I fall asleep really fast.

I contemplate making soap, flying across the country starting underground boxing clubs, and finding new and unique ways to create social havoc... Oh wait, I keep forgetting thats not me.

I do at times enjoy/suffer insomnia so ive dealt with this alot.

I am a fan of the white noise method, specifically a fan.

Ive used music in the past, preferably radio with periodic commercial breaks

Ive got an a320 dingo so I will either use it to watch a very dry movie, or play a strategy /puzzle based game for a while, or on rare occasion use it to read ebooks.

but honestly the single best thing ive ever used to get asleep when i absolutely need to sleep (IE important meeting the next day) is a shot of nyquil. Alcohol mostly does the same trick but it seems like you need more, and end up more groggy for it in the morning. Pot can have the same effect, but makes it harder to get out of bed the next morning. So I say nyquil if its an urgent need to sleep, but if its not, try some of the less chemically enhanced methods. Addiction sucks.

It can't be resolved, at least not at this hour.

I lol'd. Though, I did always find that strangely hypnotic.

I feel the need to apologise for clogging the forums with useless stuff like this, but hell, it's a discussion, and would you believe it, all the usual lines of advice for stuff like this have went to sleep. XD

EDIT: And the unthinkable has happened, I have no alcohol available.

Smack yourself in the head until the thing you're thinking about goes away, then fall down unconscious.

Seriously, try mentally putting your body to sleep. Start with your feet and work your way up. Mentally tell your body it's tired while breathing slowly. It helps me at least.

Other than that, try drinking booze?

Remind yourself that whatever's on your mind doesn't NEED to be done, then think about other things. Daydream. Sooner or later, that'll turn into REAL dreaming.
