So I've been stuck in The Witcher for a while now and online walkthroughs and wikis don't seemed to have helped, so I thought I would ask here.

I am at a point near the end of the first chapter where you rescue a witch who is hiding in a cave from being lynched by the local villagers who think that her presence has summoned an evil ghostly wolf thing which is terrorizing the village. After conversing with the villagers and getting them to back off and a short cut scene I'm put up against this ghost wolf and it just slaughters me. I've tried it about 5 times and I don't even stand a chance. I just get hit with some attack which stun locks me and then get raped with really powerful attacks whilst outnumbered. The witch who is with me at the time also gets killed almost instantly. So what do I do? I get the feeling I'm missing something really important because there doesn't appear to be any way out of this fight. Do I just need to do some grinding to get stronger?

Also, I've yet to obtain a silver sword. Should I have one by now? Is that what I'm missing? I've looked around for one and haven't seen any trace of one anywhere. No-one has even mentioned it.

Thanks in advance for helping out an inept noob.

Yeah, that thing is really fucking hard. My advice is:

A. Turn down your settings to the minimum for this fight. Essentially the game's engine shits itself and dies when it has to render that much fire.

B. If you aren't doing this already, load yourself to the gills with potions. And I think Specter Oil hurts this thing, too.

C. Keep Abigail alive - she heals you.

D. If all else fails, you can insta-kill it if you get a stun off with Aard. That's how I beat it (Hard difficulty).

And (unfortunately, for this fight) you don't get a silver sword until Chapter II.

Thanks, I'll try those out. I read in a walkthrough that using Aard is a good way to kill it, but I couldn't get it to work. It just wouldn't fall over. But I'll keep trying. Also, is there a certain stance I should be using?

I think stong one would be the fastest way to kill it, but i don't know, so long ago.
Funny i never seemed to have a problem with this fight.
Is your game up to date? Meaning Enhanced Edition and everything. Maybe they made the fight easier with a patch or something.

Yes, you should definitly use the Strong Stance against the Beast.
It´s been a while, but I seem to remember that Fast and Group doesn´t really register with him.

Also, listen to Kahunaburger, Spectre Oil is REALLY helpful.

I don't think I'm this far (only just started playing) but I'm sure that you can buy the Silver Sword in Flotsam. Speak to the dwarf blacksmith and you can craft it (you made need to buy some silver from him first though).

EDIT - I misread this...I'm talking about Witcher 2, sorry.

It should be up to date. I didn't get the game that long ago and the last time I played it was a few weeks ago, so I don't see how it wouldn't have the most recent, or at least a very recent patch. I think it's just that I suck at the game. I'm relatively new to PC gaming and The Witcher has proven to be a bigger challenge than what I'm used to.

Make sure you've bought the character upgrade that lets your Aard stun enemies, but you probably will have by the time you get to the Beast. And yes, Spectre Oil.

Yeah, this took me several tries to do as well - I sort of cheated with this and downed a couple potions to help with damage and health regen in the caves before that fight, and used group stance whilst attacking the big sod until everything was dead, and then swapped to strong (I think, on the logic of "It's a big thing, strong attacks were needed). Hope that helps

The Beast is absolutely brutal if you go in unprepared, but by using Spectre Oil before the start of the fight and downing a Blizard potion at the start (after all the cutscenes have played out, because Blizard tends to run out pretty fast), he usually goes down pretty quickly.

Also, welcome to the wonderful world of Witching. You'll find this is a consistent theme with a lot of the game's harder enemies. They tear you apart if you're unprepared, but with the right potions you'll be fine.

Get some brews down your neck. Swallow, Blizzard and group attack that pup, works every time. If you really want the fight over quickly, Spectre Oil on your blade too. You can also go for the easy option and Aard stun and then 1HKO it. It is a ***** if it gets the first hit in and you get stunlocked though.

That's not cheating, that's pretty much how the game has to be played. Most of the big boss fights are close to impossible without potions.

Hmm, fair point, actually - remember having my arse handed to by some... Thing in act 2 until I read up on it + got the right oils + potions. Do love how the game makes you do that at times, even if it's a nuisance at times -
"What do you mean I've got to read about how to kill ghouls before do - Oh, right, Amnesia. Well that explains that one"

Thanks everyone. I've never been much for alchemy in any game, and it seems pretty daunting in The Witcher. It appears I have some learning to do.

Hmm, if all else fails, you can let Abigail die and temporarily side with the villagers. You get a load more allies in the fight and I remember it being significantly easier.
