I'm using a cable to directly connect the two and all of the places I have searched have not helped.
I'm sure many of you have directly connected you xbox 360 directly to your PC, so I need to know how to do it.(I have tried and failed)
I am using Vista home premium.
I need step by step directions from the beginning even the steps I have likely done already.

Wait what ... are you trying to use a single cable to connect?
Normally, people use switches, hubs, or routers to make a network they can connect their devices to.

I think direct connection is possible, but you'll need a crossover cable.
Also, I'm not sure how to set the IP address on an xbox.

Easier to plug them both into a router (you probably use one to connect to the internet with).

Yes, a single cable and I am using the cable mentioned.
my computer identifies it and my xbox has managed to see it as well.
I however having trouble getting them to connect.
I am using wireless on my computer I have the xbox directly connected to my computer.

Why not just get a wired xbox 360 controller? They're only like $30, and it'll save you a huge headache, because they're "plug and play" on PCs.

What...?
I'm not talking about a controller at all.

Hmm.
Looks like you already have the devices connected, they're just not sharing stuff.

Control Panel > Network and Internet > View Network Computers and Devices

Find Xbox 360 and right click, and go to Media Sharing Options and allow sharing.

(I did not figure this out, I copied this off a comment on a youtube video)

Well one of the things I tried.
Didn't work I however jsut decided to try somethign else and it's working fine though.
I'm connecting to xbox live and should be able to play most of my games after this.
You know some of their games require updates to play them :/
it was stressful though T.T
18 mins of updates first time I've ever connected my xbox to the internet.
and you should see the cables all over the place.

Oh!
Could have said you wanted to connect to XBLA ... that was never going to work, 'cos your PC's network adapter and wireless adapter are on different subnets.

Hmm.
Maybe if some sort of firewall was set up to passthrough a bunch ports ... but it's a whole bunch of useless work when you can just connect the xbox directly.

Hmm I guess I could try that after I'm done with updates.
I have some things I'd like to do using the pc and xbox and it was what I was trying to do.
Everything else made it look complicated.
