So I recently decided that I wanted to build myself a gaming PC, as I want one and everyone I have talked to said it was a far better deal to build one yourself. I have a budget of about 800-900 USD for this thing and was wondering if any of you gaming folk here would be able to help me pick some parts to put this thing together with.

That's odd, I have multipul friend who have bought gaming PC's capable of running most games at full resolution and a better then decent frame rate for less then that.
Try:
Lambdatek if you're in the UK, and Newegg if you're in the US.
Apart from that, I can say that building your own PC gives you MUCH greater knowledge about its inner workings, and means you become more familiar with its hardware capabilities, since pre-built PC's often have unwanted peripherals and that raises the cost...

I think people say that just because they bought their 4000 dollar PC and so they try and justify it by saying everything else is shite.Xzi said:
Go for AMD if you are on a budget. It's not the very top of the line but its good enough for gaming and their parts uses less power so you can save a bit on the PSU.
Also it looks like AMD is staying with the AM3 socket for a while, which will mean that you can keep the mainboard and RAM when you upgrade the next time.
Sure an Intel/nVidia combo is better but if its just for gaming and looking up crap on youtube you might as well go for the cheaper solution.
If it fits your budget I would suggest a Phenom x4 955, a HD5870 (or 5770), a 500W PSU from Corsair, 4GB RAM (make sure its compatible with the mainboard) any cheap case and speakers, a nice headset with mic.
Also ASRock mainboards has made a nice feature called Instant Boot presented here by "George" and "HUGO"! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BucIjXZVxXo] Yeeeaah! And yes it works, I have it on my HTPC and it boots to windows faster than my TV takes to come on. About 8 seconds and Windows is on and ready to go. It's basically the windows hibernate function but it works better.

The Radeon 5770 is a fairly inexpensive, and good quality card made for budget performance. Usually around $150-170, and should last a while. Buy a second to crossfire whenever you need more oomph, and you're set for a long time.
Just a rumor made up by people who are timid about ATI. My laptop here runs Crysis on high with an intel quad core 2.0ghz and a radeon HD 4650 gpu. It *can* run on Very High for about 15 minutes before it gets lap frying hot.ThreeDogsToaster said:

It all depends what you want it for. What games? Max specs, or just enough to play? You can definitely set up a gaming rig for that money and get a fulfilling experience with it. Just remember though, the more you spend, the longer it'll last.ThreeDogsToaster said:

People looking at grabbing an ATI GPU might want to wait a few months because they're releasing the Radeon HD 6000 series of GPUs before the end of the year which should drop the prices on 5000 series GPUs a bit.
