I need a decent anti virus that's not too expensive and wont hog my system im currently running avast which works well most of the time but it kind of failed me recently and forced a full system wipe to remove a virus so little worried about using it as my sole protection.

There isn't any software that's going to give you total protection. Personally I use ZoneAlarm Free which has only let me down once years ago and was only vulnerable to that particular threat for a short while. Avast! is supposed to be one of the other good free ones but I don't really care for the interface nor the inability to exit it on a whim to work out whether it's interfering with something. As for using it your sole protection, really you only want to be using one at a time as security software can conflict and one can bog down your computer enough by itself. If you're looking for something to fill the gaps then consider Malwarebytes which is more or less made for exactly that. Also keep in mind that the human element is one of the most common failure points when it comes to computer security...learn from your mistakes.

I use AVG Free and Malwarebytes. They seem to work well enough, and they seem to remove any form of nasty software that I end up with. Not too much of a hog either, at least when you aren't scanning, anyway.
