My roommates and I just got a router for our apartment. We paid 150 for 4 months of 50 mb internet. We?re getting less than 10 now. Have never gotten close to 50. Not only that, but when I?m connected to the router I can?t connect to a single website. DNS errors and webpage not available everywhere. Here?s where it gets backwards. I can go on AIM, I can go on Steam and play any of my games online, and my connection says I have internet access. Yet I don?t. I?m stuck using a 3 foot long ethernet cable. Heck, I can?t even sign on MSN or Skype when connected to the router.

I have no idea why this is happening because the first time I connected to the router things were just fine. For all of 5 minutes.

Anything useful will be appreciated. Oh, I'm on an HP, got windows 7 and it's a Netgear router.

First things first, can you give more info about the router itself? The model and stuffs. Only the brand isn't enough to give a good overview.

I can only guess your router decided to freak out and have some really messed configurations. So, I would reboot the router to the factory default (there's usually a button on the back of it that you need to press for 10 seconds) and set the wireless all over again.

It is a Netgear N150.

I would, but I don't want to do anything that will make things worse. I mean, it is the router for the apartment and my roommates aren't here.

Does your router go through a modem first? If so what is the brand on it? Whats your ISP? Things like that are more important then what your computer is because I'm assuming your roomates are all having the same problem right?

I'm the only one with the problem. Our ISP is SuddenLink, and it's plugged into a wall jack I believe.
Only you? Well fuck sounds like a firewall problem. But... i'd also check to see what your default gateway is.

Go to your network and sharing center then click on view status then details and you'll see your IP address and all that. Check your default gateway, I'm pretty sure that is decided by either the ISP or the router, it should match what your router's is.

I think 192.168.1.1

I got that here

Aaaand what @dmase said makes sense. I didn't consider you would be the only one with the problem.
Must be some configuration on your lappy then.

Have you tried removing the router out of the equation temporarily, that way you can see if it's your connection, computer (i.e. try both computers), or the router.

Well, I have to wait until my roommates get here before trying anything. If anything happens, I'll let you guys know.
