Hey guys. I have recently started making a 2d top down action rpg in which you play as a mage. I am currently programming the spells for it and i was wondering if you guys had any ideas for what spells i should add. Thanks in advance.

Can always go with the classics, Fireball, Lightning bolt, Shadow bolt, Some form of summoning and healing spells.

A friend of mine who did a similar thing, turned to Pokemon to get ideas for spells, which I thought was a novel but effective approach.

Yeah i've got some of the classics. done a fireball, got lightning planned, u got shadow bolts as ur primary, i've been considering doing summons (harder to program though) and got heal.
I might give that a try. Thanks for the idea.

Summoning spells would be kinda cool. You could always go to a table top gaming store and buy a dnd spell compendium. That will provide you with more spells than you could shake an implement at.

There's always warding against/curing/causing status effects, which remember, are only useful if you make them that way.

Dont forget defensive spells in general. If your mages are going to be squishy(and they should be!) they need spells to compensate.

Any plans for improving systems for the skills? Like lightning could evolve to chain lightning (ala jumps to 4 or 5 nearby targets decreasing damage with each jump), Fireball could become an AoE attack. You should have some sort of CC, say Charm, Fear, Polymorph, Snare (ie movement speed decreases), root (completely locked in place).

Maybe, however its not likely. what I have planned is a linear progression for the spells. so you put in a skill point and it adds X Y where X is an amount and Y is the spells main purpose (ie damage, duration, range etc). Although it would be cool to have variable skills like you say. Might implement this in the future but its not likely atm.

A beam, a wave, a Cone effect, a chain effect, a self-situated outward radial burst, a projectile-imact radial burst, a screen filler.

A Damage over time, a movement slow, a stun, a knockback, a life-leech, a protective shield,

Mix, match, big bang boom.
