I am going into a software engineering program next year and need a new laptop. I want to be able to run games on it and it needs to be a laptop because I won't have space in my dorm for a desktop even a small one. I doesn;t need to run stuff on max settings just run them on low to medium for things like cod 6. so please recomend me some laptops. also my price rang is, ideally, less than $1000 or about 700 British pounds

Basically min specs should be for a Windows 7 computer
4GB RAM
500GB HD
Dual Core or Quad Core processor
That should be enough to run everything you need

Dell studios are a good value for the hardware you get. I'm a computer engineering/electrical engineering dual major so very similar to what you're doing. I got a studio 1555 with 4 GB ram, 320 GB HD, Intel duo T9550 at 2.67 GHz, and what I would say is an upper-mid lower-high range GPU. I don't know a lot about graphics cards or PC gaming but it runs new games like Just Cause 2 and Mass Effect 2 at the highest settings easily. I don't know if these games are really optimized or something. That's my two cents. Also fish around online for coupons I found a 25% off one which is a lot for buying a computer.

Edit: Also, dunno what he's talking about with needing a 500 GB HD for Windows 7... Size of hard drive won't affect how the computer runs, only the speed of the hard drive.

If you are going for low cost I guess you could *shudders* go for a dell.

But for the love of god, if you come into some extra money, get something better. Like an Asus or a Lenovo.

It's all the same hardware... Only issue I've had with a Dell is my laptop's keyboard broke. I chose to replace it myself, they sent me a free one, got it in two days, donezo.

I'm not a computer expert but from my experience Dells certainly aren't bad. Also laptops intended for media use often have really good graphics cards and if you buy them without RAM they aren't half bad and you can add in the RAM yourself and save a bit.

4 reasons why I'm not going to buy a mac. (the 4th one is the most important)
1.) I rather dislike os 10 and 10.5
2.) it won't run alot of the games I play,
3.) I don;t think there are any macs for less than $1200
4.) I am going into windows/linux oriented program

They're not that great. I've been using a mac for two years and it's no better than windows. They both have their good points and bad points.

Anyway, I've been hearing a lot of good stuff about the new i5 and i7 processors. If you are looking for a new laptop, you should probably get one with that kind of processor.

Ph33nix - Of course there are macs for less than that. I bought mine for 800. Although I get what you mean, macs are really overpriced.

You could try this one? It's right on your price range, and it has decent capabilites.

I hate laptops, so I cant easily recommend a specific brand. Given that people are giving you some though and I do Comp Sci, I'm gonna offer one piece of advice - the absoulte first thing you should look at is screen size. Assuming you don't wanna be in Uni in the labs programming all the time and want to do some from home having a tiny tiny screen is a massive ballache. I work on two screens at work and 28" at home - anything vastly smaller starts to become painful real fast. My advice would actually be to get a desktop with *loads* of screen estate instead and get a netbook for taking notes, but apparently thats not an option.

You want an Alienware M11x. You'll never look back. The basic model is in your price range, but if you can stretch a bit to up the specs a bit that would increase your enjoyment quite a lot too!

I would recommend an Acer Aspire 5739G. It's what I have and it runs all the games I have at full spec.

Comes with:
Intel Core 2 Duo processor
NVIDIA GeForce 130M
15.6" HD LED LCD screen
4GB RAM
320 BD HDD
Windows Vista OS

I've never had any problems with it, apart from with Fallout 3, but that's probably due to Bethesda's dodgey coding than the computer.

Cost £600
