I just finished reading the Nightside series by Simon R Green and now I need something new to read and my friends have been useless so any ideas would be great.

My favories are The Dresden Files, Codex Alera and the Night Angel Trillogy so anythingsimiler to those would be great but all ideas are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

And no Harry Potter.

Edit: Sorry should have said what kind of books. I like fantasy books best magic and swords and stuff but I also like books set in the real world but with magic e.g. The Dresden Files is set in moden day Chicargo but the main Charactor is a wizard.

Can you give us a better idea as to what sort of books you want? Why you like certain books or what genre's your interested in.

A Song of Ice and Fire (first book, A Game of Thrones), its one of the finest fantasy series ever, and it has a TV series based off of it. Theses books are big, and complex, with lots of political intreague to go with the swords and sorcery, although the sorcery doesn't come in right away.

Also, if you haven't read the Wheel of Time books, shame on you, these are also very good books, although I like A Song of Ice and Fire better. These have a lot more of a traditional fantasy story to them, as well as more magic if that something that you really like.

Okay, one of the best fantasy series at the moment is A Song of Ice and Fire, it's very good stuff but be warned a) it's five books so far and not finished and b) it's not a happy series, lots of major characters die and it's depiction of feudal times is not sugar-coated.

Other than that is you don't mind Pulp then the Elric Saga is fun stuff, heavy metal fantasy filled with demons and evil gods that sort of thing. It's good but as I said, it's very rooted in pulp.

Perdido Street Station is one of the best recent fantasy novels, it's set in a Victorian era rather than the usual feudal setting. I'd call it steampunk but it's much more than that, it's sort of steampunk meets monster movie meets Lovecraftian horror meets Philip K. Dick. It's weird as hell but absolutely brilliant.

For a modern day settinmg American Gods is set in the "real" world but with the gods of myth all still alive, and coming into conflict with news gods representing things like TV, economics, technology and similar things. Very good especially with it's potrayal of washed-up gods long past their prime.

Beyond that maybe The Dark Tower or The Book of the New Sun fantasy series about a cowboy and a torturer respectively.I haven't finished either series so I can't vouch for all the books but the early ones for both are great.

Seconding A Song of Ice and Fire.

If you're looking for something with a bit more magic, The Rift War Saga, by Raymond E. Feist.

Also, you can't go wrong with The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings.

The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, and The Name of the Wind by Partick Rothfuss are both excellent, and both also have very original and deep fantasy settings.
