I am not the most technologically savvy person, and here is my dilemma. I have my 360 going through my Motorola SB5101 Modem in the ethernet port, and my computer is hooked up to the USB port. The problem is, when I am playing my Xbox online, I can do nothing on my computer. My AIM shuts down and sites do not load up.

If I were to buy a router, would this fix my problem? Would I be able to use both at the same time? I appreciate any help.

Also, and it may be an unrelated issue, every time I start up my Xbox it says "Disconnected from messenger". I don't have any friends on there anyways, so it isn't a big deal, but does anyone have a clue why it would automatically disconnect me from it?

A router works. I had the same problem. Only one thing can be connected at a time with the modem, but with a router, well. You get whatever you want.

About the "Disconnected from messenger", I think that you have to set up that you do not want it to connect to messenger. I don't remember how to do this. It's somewhere on your profile or account screen.

Edit: From your profile, go to "Auto Sign-in" and you can set it to not auto sign-in to messenger. Or from the "Account Management" option, you can go to "Windows Live ID" and it gives you the option to change your e-mail address. Maybe that might have been the problem.

I guess I'll just go buy one and find out, I suppose I can always take it back if it doesn't do the trick. Any suggestions on a wired router? I hate the thought of having more wires around, but I am not going to buy that adapter for the 360, it's way too pricey. My desk will be my modem, router, computer, speakers, monitor, keyboard, phone, and the stupid box that we have to use to get phone service. I envy people that can just plug their phone into a wall.

I have a Linksys SRX 200 Wireless router and that great. But I got it used at a thrift store... I'm not sure how much it costs in a store. Before that I had a wireless router that AT&T provided.

A router will probably fix most problems (provided you have enough bandwidth, but I doubt that would be a problem). Plug your modem into a router, then your PC and Xbox to the router.

Yes, a router will fix your problem. The same thing happened to my brother when he got his Xbox, and a router let him use both the 360 and his computer at the same time.

Odd for you not to have a router. But yes, a router will certainly help your situation. You shouldn't really need to go wireless as that will be a bigger investment. You should be able to find a new router for around $20 if you shop around.

Hmm. I never new that you could get a router to do that.

Who knows, maybe I'll play online more often now.
