Lately I've been in the mood for some good "death game" movies, such as Gamer, Death Race and Battle Royale 1-2. But those are the ones I know off and well, I was wondering if anyone had any tips on other movies like that. Basicly good old Governments going "Oh noes! Crime! Lets make games of it and watch people die!" and such.

Oh, and yeah, no need to write Hunger Games since I already wrote Battle Royale and don't need to see the american version thank you very much.

Well, it isn't quite televised murder, but I would recommend both the Crank films. They were made by the guy who did Gamer, and they focus on the gimmick of fighting and killing in order to keep your organs running with adrenaline or electricity.

Well fine, then.

I don't really know of too many...I imagine films about Roman gladiators would be similar in theme. They're sort of the ones who started the trend, after all. Also, I don't know how you feel about anime, but thinking about this sort of made me think of a game called Summer Wars. It's not really a "death games" sort of thing, but it is about the only game about a kid who saved the world through a video game I've seen that isn't just a totally cheesy wish-fulfillment thing. It's got great characterization, and the way it plays out...well, works. I guess it is sort of "death games," the challenge is just ordered by a hostile computer program rather than the government.

The Running Man, Rollerball, Arena, Bloodsport, the original Death Race 2000- really, pick any action movie from the 70s-80s that looks dumb enough, and there's a 50% chance that it's what you're looking for.

Cube

Meatball Machine

........Can't remember the name, there's a movie where Rutger Hauer is a hunter who likes to hunt people and Ice-T (or Ice Cube, one of those cold-themed guys) is his target. The Most Dangerous Game, maybe?

None of those are masterpieces or anything, but unusual in their own way.

Cube is pretty good for a psychological thriller. Running Man is good for a typical sci-fi Arnie b-movie.

That movie is called Surviving the Game. It's with Ice- T.

I haven't gotten into it much but if you're interested in Anime there's 'Deadman Wonderland'. From what I've seen it's about a guy surviving in a prison turned violent game show.

Hard Target might fit your bill. It's got Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lance Henrikson, and Arnold Vosloo (The mummy) in it! On top of that, it has Wilford Brimley playing a backwoods cajun. It's terrible, terrible fun.

Ah, Death Race was a good movie, shame Gamer wasn't as awesome though.

I don't suppose any of the Saw movies would qualify?

Most of the movies I was going to recommend other people already have, so here's a book:

The Long Walk - by Stephen King. It's one of his older Bachman titles, and is one of the best of the genre. Basically, these teenagers have to keep walking until all but one of them dies, and if they stop or walk slower than a determined speed the government shoots them.

Odd choice but Predator? It's got that whole survival game feel with characters being picked off one by one and essentially hunted by the Predator. Not exactly what you are looking for but there is some definite simularities.

Deadman wonderland?

Need somewhere to put prisoners, make them work for their food in a theme park! If they don't eat a certain pill every three days, they die! And don't worry about the show race, its all special effects!

"The Long Walk" is my favorite King story, and I've read most of them. Simple and brutal.

Also try the written version of "The Running Man." You can get both together in the four-in-one The Bachman Books.
