Well, as my name shows, I am a rookie in gaming culture. Heck, the biggest game series I played up until a few months ago was Halo. But, after being on Gameinformer for 2009, the coming onto the Ecsapist, I realize that there are so many games that I have not played that affected gaming as a whole. So, I was wondering if I could get a list of games I need to play to understand, and expand my knowledge of gaming. So, any list of games that in your opinion, any gamer would need to play, are welcome.
(and yes, I use the word game a lot.)

Half Life 2 and all It's sequels. Fallout 3, Beyond Good and Evil, Mother 3.

What consoles do you have? There's some brilliant ps2 games that you could get for cheap at the moment.

First play any NES or SNES game possible.

Then Buy a few aged games for the computer preferably System Shock 1+2, Half Life, Dues Ex, Duke Nukem.

Afterwards go to PS2 for Shadows of the Collosus, ICO, and Grand theft auto 3.

Then Modern Classics such as Bioshock, Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Red Dead Redemption.

And you're done (more or less)

Good advice. SNES games are a good place to go to, especially with an emulator. Also, PC is definitely home to a vast library of games.

Online FPS: Team Fortress 2

Action RPG: Mass Effect, Demons' Souls

Platformer: Donkey Kong 64 (I will bring this game back from the dead!!!)

Adventure: The Legend of Zelda (to get a good range: Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess)

RTS: I leave this area to better informed people (along with JRPG). Not bashing, just not my interest.

Sandbox: Red Dead Redemption

Open-world RPG: Fallout 3, Oblivion

Single-player FPS: BioShock
