Okay, before I begin I wanted to be forthright and honest about this thread:
Yes, it is an advice thread, and is about interpersonal relations (game related, though), so if you don't like this kind of thread, please simply hit the convenient "back" button on your browser, and save us both some grief. Also, while it may sound angsty, I'm not a teen.
If anyone here has played Legend of the Five Rings (a tabletop RPG), you probably know about the concepts behind it, especially honor. For those who haven't, one of the big things in the game is the concept of honor, which can be interpreted in various ways, but generally are based on the code of Bushido.
That's most of what you need to know to understand the rest of the story. There were seven of us playing, and the lord I was protecting had been accused of murdering the heir apparent to a high title in one of the other clans. In the course of this investigation, we determined he was likely not the murderer. The heir in question had been convinced that there was some dark secret about a Princess of the empire, and was going to reveal it the following evening. Half of the group split off, and discovered that the murderer was in fact the handmaiden of the princess of the empire (the niece of the emperor). They did not share this information with the full group, and instead chose to kill the real murderer and hide her body in order to ensure the death of my lord, and the end of the matter.
Now, here comes the questions. It was at this point that I got really angry (both in character and out), not only about what I felt was a really bad thing to do, but also about the lack of team camaraderie. I realized that given that my character's code of honor (where truth and justice are more important than the appearance of it), and those of the other characters (quite the opposite) didn't mesh well, and that I should stop playing. We went around and around about this, and I finally ended up giving my character sheet back to the GM on the basis that I wouldn't be coming to any future games. At best, my character would be isolated from the rest of the group; an outsider. At worst, he'd find out about what the others had done, and kill them. I don't believe I could have fun playing a character with any different a moral code.
To clarify, these people I play with are (mostly) friends of mine, and people I likely wouldn't see often (if at all) outside of the game. They live in a different city, and are busy a lot of the time (as am I).
So, my questions are:
- Should I stay to see how things work out? If things get really ugly, should I stay and see them through (even killing other PCs)? I will add that when it was made clear that the death of my lord would likely lead to my death, one of the other players was sympathetic but not too broken up, and another was actively hoping for my character's death.
- Should I try to create another character more suited to the group that exists, or stick to my guns and say "screw this"?
