If you're on a PC then using a program like SONAR would be ideal. It takes a hell of a lot of time to learn, and is bloody expensive, but if you're serious about your music, then it's worth it. SONAR is professional level software.
If you're going for something a bit more affordable and casual, then you can buy good music software from as low as £50 up if you know where to look. I can't give you any specifics, but get on the google and have a look for what fits your budget.
