Anybody who has payed any attention to Neill Blomkamp's career will have probably noticed he is a hardcore Halo fan. District 9 and Elysium have an absurd amount of references to the video game series; I mean Elysium is about a halo built around Earth.

I guess with only two films and a few shorts it's a bit too soon to say but I get the impression Blomkamp may be attempting to create a Halo movieverse and is setting down the foundations for it with each of his films.

I'm not the kind of person who would get excited by this normally, but if I am right and Blomkamp is attempting to do one of the most ridiculous things in Hollywood history I am pretty impressed and wish him luck.

Aside from the Elysium construct, is the Halo called Elysium? I don't know, I can't think of any actual references to Halo sorry. It'd be pretty cool if all of his films were an elaborate set-up to a Halo film but I have doubts.

.
Halo didn't invent the concept of a ringworld. That's been around for for over forty years (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringworld). So no; unless you can come up with a better example than that I'm gonna have to call bullshit on this one mate.
No need to be quite so aggressive.
After all, he was slated to actually make the Halo movie, back in the day, so it's undoubtedly a reference, if nothing more than Blomkamp saying: "I've really wanted to do a scene involving orbital rings since 2005, write me a plot that lets me goddammit!"
I agree that he's probably not trying to build a canonic prequel with either of these films, but quite possibly a spiritual one - with Elysium at least - kind of like the way that Bioshock followed System Shock 2.

Not sure how the OP thinks District 6 comes into it though... that's one set of references I'm not seeing.
