You Mustn't Run Away

As a massive fan of the original show, and the remake movies, I laughed. I laughed a lot.

I always felt for Shinji, even if he was a bit of a twat, his reasons I could at least stack up and say "Yeah, fair enough".

So......any news on Rebuild 3?
Due to come out this November, apparently. 2.0 was brilliant, so I really can't wait.

Love it!
I'd have added: " (It has guns!)" to the "I want you to pilot this giant robot"-bubble, for added exchaggeration.

Thank you, God's of the Escapist for creating a comic involving Evangelion. As much as the portrayal of this comic kind of annoys me, I found it slightly amusing nonetheless.

Also, I am sick of people calling Shinji a pussy. Seriously.

And all the people saying it didn't make sense, try to actually watch the show. Read about it, think about it, think about its themes. It doesn't spoon-feed information to the viewer, it's like a puzzle you have to think about.

Too many people think it's just pretentious, but when you actually think about what its talking about and learn more about it, then it does have understandable themes and isn't very hard to understand.

*rant over*

I'm just saying that by any sane metric, Gendo Ikari is the best dad in the universe.
(1)All that abandoning you for years, (2)using you as a pawn in my schemes, and never treating you like a son. (3)Forcing you to constantly hang around two beautiful women who will never sleep with you and a (4)'robot' I treat more like my own child than you, that TOTALLY makes up for it right?
To address these in the order listed above:

(1) Yeah, a pretty dick move that. Then again, this is THE Gendo Ikari we're talking about. Having to live around that guy, son or not, would be a mixed blessing at best, I must say.

(2)+(3) These two fall into the "whose fault is that?" category. Arguably, Gendo had a completely unfair amount of leverage over Shinji, but whose fault is it that Shinji just went along with it? And yes, Shinji did have to live with two women who didn't respect him and would probably never sleep with him if he was the last man on earth, but who's fault is it that Shinji was a completely unattractive sad-sack ***** of a poor excuse for a teenage boy?

I think Gendo's being used as a bit of a scapegoat, here.

(4)So Gendo likes his toys more than he likes me. Yeah, he's an asshole, but that doesn't change the fact that "I GET TO PILOT A GIANT MOTHERFUCKING ROBOT AND BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE OF MANKIND!"
And the robot is my mom. Maybe? I guess? If so, I get to satisfy my Oedipus complex and kick monster ass at the same time. Hey Dad! I get to symbolically fuck your wife every single time I go out in the field! Drink down that burn-sauce, glasses dude!

Bottom line, go read "Shinji and Warhammer 40k". It's good; you'll like it.

I'll just leave this here.

(Not that I mean anything by it, but I always think of this image whenever someone makes the usual complaints about Eva.)
While someone in his situation is entitled to feel bad, you don't need to bring it up every five minutes. Say it once, complaint noted, move on, there's no need to make it a recurring thing. Yes, this is terrible, but you know what? Make your complaint and then get to it, you don't need to constantly say it, because, oi, more important things to be doing.

Its simple. Kill the Batman After watching numerous 'deep' Animes (Tenchi Muyo won't man up either) i have come to the conclusion that Japanese males in Anime just don't like women. Like at all. They also whine about it. ALL the time.

In the west we call this the "Shut up and fuck her in the ass" hypothesis.
I'm probably the 50th person to say it, but...THIS.

OT: While I've never seen the anime that the comic is based on, I can immediately ID several different stories with the exact same gap. Most recent one I've seen is the newest Transformers movie, where the protagonist has a hot (rich) girlfriend who supports him financially, an Ivy League degree, a presidential honor, and a flippin' robot car...and he complains about his life. I'm pretty sure that he's living in my dreams from when I was an adolescent.

CAPTCHA: weylan yutani... thanks SOLVEmedia, I WOULD like to watch Aliens later. Thank you for reminding me.

Ah, no. You just feel the pain, the arm stays in place. No fun dying from blood loss, and organ failure when you can die from overwhelming PAIN!
Except once you get 'good' enough piloting it, you DO start getting the actual injuries. Why just have overwhelming pain when you can have your intestines ripped out without ever leaving the pilot's seat?

Oddly enough, I've never seen the entire Evangelion anime. I've seen enough episodes to get the gist of the comic though. Good work.

It's really strange, I was looking at buying this series just the day before the comic came out. Sadly, finding a Region 2 (UK) DVD for it is almost impossible online.

2.0 or 2.22?

Because these movies seem to follow an odd routine of being released in theaters in a somewhat incomplete state, and then having additional scenes added for the DVD/blu-ray release.

A giant motherfucking robot which he has no training in and which gives him massive amounts of pain and sometimes to a point, real physical injuries. There's also the pressure of saving the whole world on your shoulders.

Oh yeah, what a joy.

Well since it only gets cinema release in Japan, its hardly an issue for most of us since we get the DVD/BluRay anyway.

I do believe there have been DVD releases of 1.0/2.0 followed by 1.10/2.20, and finally 1.11/2.22.

So, it's still a bit weird how Gainax is handling these releases.

I have a question. Do you all really expect a 14-year-old kid to have the mental maturity and focus of a fully adult male, or do you expect him to act like a little whiny shit? To put the question in context, think about your complaints about your online experiences on Xbox and other platforms where you had to interact with other so-called 14-year-olds. Did they behave in accordance with your expectations, being all "manly" and mature or, at least, non-whiny, or did they act more like a bunch of Shinjis, all whiny and irritating? Which is then closer to reality, your expectations or Shinji's behavior?

Do any of you remember what you were like when you were 14? I guarantee you were just as unlikable and annoying, as are most of us when going through that stage of life. You're a chaotic raging mixture of hormones, unstable emotions, ignorance, overly simplistic thought patterns, and a need to challenge everything around you. How many of your hated your parents during that time or tended to rebel a lot? How many of you would push people's buttons just to see how far you could go or how much you could get away with? How many of you thought you knew everything and everyone else was, by definition, an idiot?

Point is 14-year-olds are often very annoying, by nature, and can get on your last nerve. Why would there be an expectation for Shinji to be any different. (I'm sure many of you have noticed that there are a lot gamers, who despite being much older, have yet to mature past that stage.) Yeah, he annoys the piss out of me, too, but he's a 14-year-old kid! I don't expect him to not annoy me, because he's being what a 14-year-old would be given his situation. To me, it would be the exceptional, almost superhuman, 14-year-old who just walks into that, instantaneously mans-up and start kicking everyone's ass from day 1. Sure, we would cheer because that's the idiom of our thinking as gamers, however, that's probably the most unrealistic thing that could ever happen, under the circumstances.

Comic's still funny as hell. LOL!

ADDENDUM: Also, I have to say, if Shinji were more like 22-25 years old or older, then I would agree 100% with the man-up comments, as they would be much more applicable.

The only complaint I have about NGE is just that it assumes the viewer knows the universe, as if it's the 4th season or a spin-off of a long running show or something.

No, he's just not likeable.

In all reality getting chucked into a giant robot that grants a 13 year old huge amounts of power provided he fights terrifying robots from god knows where would probably make you a jaded ***** too.

Oh, and you feel everything Mr. bot does too. So when your arm gets ripped off? Yeah. Ow.

The first thing you need to realize is that at some level Evangellion is trying to be a deconstruction (yes, its being used loosely here) of the mecha genre. Of all the things it chose to focus on, its the idea that the "average kid thrown into unusual situation" trope isn't done wrong, but the idea that the kid is going to both be completely well-adjusted to society, and maintaining it is beyond odd. Especially when you start building coincidence on coincidence.

The second thing you need to realize is that the crap about "not running away" is actually a very common trope in Japanese anime and over story mediums. No, it wasn't spoon fed to you, and the west has another way of looking at it (was it Dumbledore who talked about doing what's right, versus what's easy?) but the idea is that you have obligations and expectations, and the attempt to abandon them is catastrophic, and not just for you. The flip side of it is that sometimes you have to do some pretty crazy shit. Like piloting giant robots.
Sorry if I sound ignorant about NGE. I haven't watched the series in, like, years. My memory is a bit hazy on it.

Also, tbh... I think I slept through some of the later episodes where there were just long pauses of nothingness.
Oh, I wouldn't get the wrong idea. It's still a confused, poorly executed and poorly planned show. Its just that the things people get knee jerk reactions over tend to be the tip of the iceberg.
