I have a question. Do you all really expect a 14-year-old kid to have the mental maturity and focus of a fully adult male, or do you expect him to act like a little whiny shit? To put the question in context, think about your complaints about your online experiences on Xbox and other platforms where you had to interact with other so-called 14-year-olds. Did they behave in accordance with your expectations, being all "manly" and mature or, at least, non-whiny, or did they act more like a bunch of Shinjis, all whiny and irritating? Which is then closer to reality, your expectations or Shinji's behavior?
Do any of you remember what you were like when you were 14? I guarantee you were just as unlikable and annoying, as are most of us when going through that stage of life. You're a chaotic raging mixture of hormones, unstable emotions, ignorance, overly simplistic thought patterns, and a need to challenge everything around you. How many of your hated your parents during that time or tended to rebel a lot? How many of you would push people's buttons just to see how far you could go or how much you could get away with? How many of you thought you knew everything and everyone else was, by definition, an idiot?
Point is 14-year-olds are often very annoying, by nature, and can get on your last nerve. Why would there be an expectation for Shinji to be any different. (I'm sure many of you have noticed that there are a lot gamers, who despite being much older, have yet to mature past that stage.) Yeah, he annoys the piss out of me, too, but he's a 14-year-old kid! I don't expect him to not annoy me, because he's being what a 14-year-old would be given his situation. To me, it would be the exceptional, almost superhuman, 14-year-old who just walks into that, instantaneously mans-up and start kicking everyone's ass from day 1. Sure, we would cheer because that's the idiom of our thinking as gamers, however, that's probably the most unrealistic thing that could ever happen, under the circumstances.
Comic's still funny as hell. LOL!
ADDENDUM: Also, I have to say, if Shinji were more like 22-25 years old or older, then I would agree 100% with the man-up comments, as they would be much more applicable.
