We've all done it at some time. "Look at those cos-players, they're suck nerds!" "Hey, I may collect comic books, but at least I don't play D and D." "Look at those anime freaks. Why don't they play video games like normal people?" Where does this hate between nerds come from?

Because humans need to segregate themselves. There needs to be an 'us' and a 'them' for most people to feel comfortable.

Most people will have one or two things that don't fit with the norm, but everyone looks down upon things that aren't.

A lot of nerds are insecure in their nerdiness. Thinking they are better because they partake in only one aspect, or a more mainstream aspect.

Screw em, being a nerd I know a lot of people are into different things and they are more than welcome to do them. Doesn't effect me.

Edit: I don't do cosplay but
People are more than welcome too lol.

Ninja'd. Politics, religion, music (The I liked them before they are cool indies who hate the posers who liked them after they sold out). We're tribal by design. My tribe is right because I'm in it, you're tribe is wrong because I'm not.

Comic con. There's a gathering of nerds and for some reason there are factions of nerddom that simply hate each other. Especially at Comic con, the comic nerds are pissed because what was originally their con became a con for everything.

nerd does not equal nerd. Its a very very vague term. Its like "sportsfan" could be cricket, soccer, rugby or synchronised swimming.

Because everyone has a different opinion and regardless, theres bound to be some sort of conflict between people, because we all have different intrests and likes and dislikes.

Trekkies vs warsies (star wars) anyone?

It's also nice to know there are people who like something more 'nerdie' then what your personal niche is. Especially if your mindfull/insecure of what the people around you think of your hobbies.

Woah, these two can save my kingdom anyday.

Because everyone needs something to mock, but not so different that they can't understand it. Nerds have DnD nerds, gamers have Halo kiddies, Christians have the WBC. It's the same thing over and over again.

Nerd is a broad term that encompasses a wide variety of interests some that don't appeal to others. You don't even need to be a broad as nerd, you can just say gamer, I like games but I don't like RTS, or I like RPGs but I don't like oblivion. I don't think it's so much they "hate" the individuals but thinking a certain activity is boring or lame is pretty normal.

I'm going to throw it to you this way.

If you play guitar, you're not nessecarily a douche, but if you bring a guitar everywhere you go (including the Huddle House (restuarant), then you are.

I think excessive nerdism is annoying. I dislike when a person MUST show their nerdiness at all times. The person who wants to wear a Wizard cape everywhere they go.

I don't know. Sometimes it bothers me.

I'm confused at the hate as well. And surprisingly, I've never said anything like that. I love cosplay (I haven't done it myself because my wallet can't afford to make it look good.), I watch plenty of anime, though I've never read a comic book or played Dungeons and Dragons.

There shouldn't be any hate between nerds. We're nerds for a reason: Because we love something so much that we can talk about it in such a manner that people outside would think that you're speaking a foreign language. We should respect each other since we should recognize how we feel about what we do.

We are all competing for limited resources. There is only so much shelf space at my game/hobby store. We kicked those models rockets losers out and we got more shelf space for role playing books and table top war games. If you anime people think you can take some of the space devoted to my hobbies you too will fall to my nerd rage.

The group known as nerd is actually not a group but many sub groups (just like any other group). What does an anime fan have in common with a tabletop gamer? Well those outside the nerd culture clump them together because they do not understand it.

So we are just following our animal instincts, protecting our territory.
