Today?s app review features something very special.
A charity.

First, a little context. Depaul are presumably a charity organisation helping homeless people get back on their feet, and to stay away from drugs and other dangers. To raise awareness, they built this little application, aptly named iHobo. The basic concept is that a young homeless man will live in your iPod or iPhone over a period of three days, and it?s your job to keep him fed, warm and safe. Every now and then, he?ll need your help, and you have the option to provide him with a sleeping bag, a sandwich or money.

It sounds simple enough, but it can really get frustrating. For starters, Homeless Jim and I have wildly different sleeping patterns, so I?ll wake up to about three alerts. During my sleeping hours, he?s somehow managed to have his sleeping bag stolen, gotten into a fight with a smack dealer, and nearly starve to death.
The app is actually enjoyable, if not frustrating, though if I?m enjoying the plight of Jim, I?m clearly missing the point.

Life in my iPod Touch started out alright for Jim. He was cold, so I gave him a sleeping bag. This was at twenty-five minutes to midnight. At twenty to, the bag was stolen, and I had to give him another.
That morning, he asked for money. I gave him money. He bought a warm drink. It was all good.
That was yesterday. This morning, he was cowering in fear of a smack dealer, whom he owed money, and was coming to rough him up.
I gave him the money to pay him off and keep himself alive. He went and bought more drugs with it. Then he complained about having no food. I gave him a sandwich. He threw it away and complained about wanting drugs instead.

I hate this little homeless man. Hats off to Depaul for putting up with them.

So, the review seems a little scattered, but I?ll round it all up for you. If you want a challenge, go for it. The app is interesting, to say the least, so it gets a thumbs-up from me.

I have to say, that genuinely made me laugh. The game sounds frustrating and rather nihilistic, but I suppose that's the point that the designers were trying to make. I wish the best for Homeless Jim. Maybe he'll find a hidden stash of sandwiches somewhere.

If he found a hidden stash of sandwiches, we both know he'll sell them for drug money.

A quick update for anybody interested.

When I wrote the review, I was two thirds of the way through the 'game'. Shortly after publishing, I managed to lose. I overslept, and Homeless Jim turned to drugs.

Afterwards, I tried again. I managed to be there for most of the alerts, except for one...embarrassing occasion when I was too busy playing Solitaire, and I ignored his cries for help. He took drugs because he was cold.

He had a sleeping bag. What more could he want?

That was really the only negative thing to happen. Technically, I won, but Depaul UK still had that message of me losing. My heart is in the right place, but it takes more than just a sleeping bag, a sandwich stash and some spare change to rescue young homeless people.

Probably would have helped if they'd given me more than just a sleeping bag, a sandwich stash and some spare change to rescue a young, homeless person.

Ive actually got this and have about 9 hours left.
in honesty it frustrates me more that this charity thats meant to care for the homeless are painting this picture of them that they are drug addicted, needy people. and that isnt the case for all of them. maybe im reading to far into it so ill lower it down, its addictive and in a sadistic way it is enjoyable but i think the point is you will never win the game unless you donate money to the charity. everything you do to help him goes wrong, i think the point they are trying to make is one person can support them and make them feel better but thats not enough and no amount of sleeping bags, sandwiches or spare change will help. they need a shelter and someone who CAN be there 24/7 with more than we can give the little dude on ihobo. in other words the only way to win is to donate money so they can help him :p it makes sense i guess! but its still annoying... smart idea, and it seems to have reached the younger generation and engaged them which is hard to do. so kudos to depaul UK

I think I missed the point of the message when by the end of it, I could just dream of him being real so I could kick him in the teeth for being so easily led.

Thread necromancy maybe, but I was going back through my old threads, and this amused me - So back in May 2010, I was looking after a virtual homeless man. By May 2011, I was a support worker for homeless people. This is a fun coincidence.
